Hi Guys,

I`ve just purchased a Sako 75 S/S in 30-06 and plan to run a 150grn projectile at around 2800fps. Does anyone have a good powder choice that might give me more fps?

Interestingly I found a link through google to some reloading data that included a load for 30-06 with a 93grn head running at 3500fps, can anyone top that for this calibre?

Charly

Hi Charly - good powders in the '06 with 150 bullets are RL19 and IMR4350. Both of those should get you around 2800-3000 with a 150gr bullet, depending on your barrel length and the actual bullet itself.

Scott

Thanks Scott,

This rifle has only a 20" barrel so it will be interesting to see how that affects the velocity.

Cannot predict such a velocity change without knowing all the particulars like powder, bullets etc. Too many variables.

In my 30/06 I use H414. 59 grs with 150 gr nozler ballistic tips. They avg 2994 fps *& shoot very well. I have a 22" barrel so i think you will be fine! All of the above mentioned powders are very good choices!!

Thanks for all the replies folks,

At the moment I`m shooting 3/4" groups with federal factory ammo and as soon as I have enough formed brass stored up I will have a play with the powders suggested. I did manage to shoot this Sika stag with the 30-06 a couple of weeks ago and it went down on the spot.

That's a beautiful sika stag!! Congradutlations! Thanks for sharing your picture :).

A max load of IMR4064 has done excellent for me for accuracy and over my Chrono. It out did the slower powders for me in a 20" and 18" barrel rifles.

4064 is an old favorite for the '06. When I used my M1 Garand in competition my load was 48.5 grs of it behind a 168 gr Match bullet. Not a max load and only about 2650 fps if I recall but it sure was accurate. I also found it to be about the best powder in 9.3x62 caliber.

61gr H4350/2209 gives me over 3000 fps in my Win Model 70 Sporter.

In my 06 (Interarms Mark X), I've done well with the lighter bullets (150-165 grain) using IMR 4350, H414, and H4895. IMR4064 works well, but works better with the heavier bullets in my particular gun.
I have a tack driver of a load using Nosler 200 grain partitions and H414....shoots clover leafs all day at 100 yards.

Ramshot Hunter gives great results, too. That seems like enough to start with...

does anyone have a load recipe or for that matter is it even possible to get send a 200 gr bullet at 2850 for about 3600 ft lbs through an /o6 or will I need to work that up in a 300 win mag

curious?

That is mag territory. Some will claim it can be done, dont believe it. About 2700 is max in the '06. If that, and it wont be easy.

You won't get 2850fps in the '06. Safely expect about 2700 fps. Don't be too concerned about ft/lbs, it really is fairly meaningless. Shot placement & bullet integrity is what determines a kill shot. A 30 cal, 200gr Nosler Partition or Accubond from a 30.06 has sufficient energy to kill a 500 lb animal at 300 yds. That is a long shot offhand in a hunting situation. I have found on medium game that the 150gr is the quickest killer with chest shot placement. In a brush situation where game is jumped & placement is uncertain, I would use 180gr. I would only use 200gr on huge ungulates like Eland.. While we are in 30.06 land, I'll mention that the 150gr Hornady SST is sheer bloody murder on wild pig.
Very destructive..

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?
Thank you, Mike

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
