270 winchester bullet performance question 150 partitions and A frames

Hi there
My experience with the partitions is that they always shed their weight, completely loosing the front lead section, about 45% back to the partition and stay inside a animal unless it has a very light build.
The A swift is a totally difficult fish, alway expanding to 2x - 2.5 x in size and retaining 88% to 96 %.
Usually this projectile completely penetrates or under the skin on the opposing side.
As for expanding at long range these bullets will fully expand at all ethical ranges anyone should be shooting at game.

There's nothing short of thick skinned DG that I wouldn't poke with a 150 Partition.
I haven't loaded any A-Frames or SST's so I can't speak to them, but I do plan to try some A-Frame 150's, Partition 160's Accubond 165's & 175's and some Woodleigh 180's. I've got 270's in 8 twist, 8.5 twist and a 9 twist to see which is optimal for the heavier bullets.
150 Partitions over Reloader 26 with Federal 215 primers in Federal nickel plated brass is giving me velocities from 3000-3200 depending on which rifle.

You might want to try the 160 grain Bullets for deep penetration.

I have a 270 win along with a 270 Weatherby and if I’m needing deep penetration I use a Barnes TTSX or a 150 gr A swift. Don’t get me wrong the partition is a great killing bullet if placed correctly, but I wouldn’t like taking a shot at a running away Sambar with one. Once shot a Rusa stag through the chest side on . The 160 gr partition out of a 7mm mag and it only penetrated 10 ‘’

Thanks so much for the replies everyone. Has anyone used the 150 sst from hornady? I was interested in this bullet mainly for punching paper and possibly smaller game whitetail deer sheep goat ect. anyone used the 150sst in the 270?
My Remington 270 just loves the hornady 150 SST. Very pleased with the bullet. I have shot many Oryx with it. I have even had a client take and Eland with the same bullet. (It did take more than one shot) but the 1ste shot was enough to do some real good damage.

We have been using the Federal Fusion 150gr this past week. And I also impressed. It did it job perfectly on Zebra, Black Wildebeest and Oryx. Not one of the animals went more more than 40yard. And only needed one shot.

My hunting buddy's teenage son... first moose and first bear, from a hunt last fall. No, the bear wasn't huge (7' sow), but both went down from a single shot. .270, 150 grain Partitions... The moose was close (100 yards) but the bear was a bit farther (200 yards across a lake).

Well done, I’m glad everything worked out the way it did for the young fella.

Hello Zana. I just purchased some 150gr federal fusions in 277 calibre. I read a lot of negative comments on the fusions. Glad to see some positive feedback. Do you load these yourselves? Did you recover any of the fusions? Apologies for all the questions! I have no experience with them and are in two minds if I must do load development with it.

I'm a big fan of the 140 grain Accubond and the old Fail Safes, my 270 loves both of those rounds. I know lots of people like the 130 grain Barnes in the 270, I'll have to try those some day.

Killed many elk with 150 partition out of a 270 and 160 Partition out of a 7mm/06 Imp and in their day were a heck of a bullet and did a better than average job, then went to Bitterroots which lacked accuracy of the Noslers but held together much better. The A-fames in every caliber Ive used them in have been nothing but amazing from smallest caliber to 470NE
They are and have been my go to!

I've got a few boxes of .277 caliber 160 grain Nosler Partitions. I haven't tried then yet, I don't know if my rifle will stabilize them. If they shoot OK I bet they will hit like "The Hammer of Thor".

From memory there a semi spitzer, if you keep the velocity up in a normal 1-10 twist you shouldn’t have any problems. Always found that semi spitzer’s hold there weight a little better. Good luck

Worked up a load for a 270 A-Bolt with 150 gr Swift A-Frames. My accuracy load with H-4350 delivered an average of 2807 FPS.

Nathan Foster's Ballistic Studies is a great read on any caliber to get an idea of bullet performance.

I use A-Frames in our 375 Weatherby, I agree they're an improvement on the Partitions in most instances (shots over 400 yards I think the Partitions are a little better). Try H4831 or Norma MRP and Federal 215 (magnum rifle) primers with your 150g A-Frames. Work up slowly. You should easily get 2900 plus fps without any adverse pressure signs.

I’ve used the sst, barnes and the nosler 150 grain ABLR in .270 win. I’m a fan of the 130 grain barnes as it provides really good penetration. My kids just used that to take African PG from steenbok to giraffe (neck shot). My son’s eland only required one shot.
I’ve used the .270 for antelope, deer and elk. It is a great all around caliber. I think one of the main reasons is due to minimal recoil so the shooter can be very accurate.
my second bullet choice would be the 150 grain nosler ABLR, especially if you are going to shoot more than 300 yards.

I've taken a number of pronghorn and mule deer with my .270 using 150gr Partitions. One shot kills with the longest shot on a pronghorn at about 250 yards with a fixed 4x scope. Never shot an elk with it though. That is all.

A late add-on to this thread...

I previously posted about my hunting buddy's son getting a bear and moose with his .270 last year. His other son scored this year. Last week I was blessed to help get him on his first ever moose. He too was shooting a .270 (Tikka) with 150 grain Partition handloads. We had to wait almost 2 hours for the bull to stand (he was bedded and we could only see the paddles and there were cows that would have busted us if we'd tried to get closer). Distance was 192 yards. The bull measured 50.25". After Africa I had the tripod I practiced on with me, and set it up a la my PH and got him on it for the shot. :p It is such a blessing to be able to help younger hunters.

Both are more than needed for deer sized game. The last buck that I shot with a 270 was with a 130gr Hornady interlock. The deer was facing me so was shot in the chest. The bullet penetrated about 36" before exiting. Surely nothing tougher is needed.
