Anyone that has taken a 270 win for plains game what is your go to bullet? My wife is taking hers with us in '27, Warthog, red Hartebeast, and Gemsbok are the species she is planning on but Kudu may be a possibility if the opportunity arises. She is currently shooting factory federal terminal accent ammo and it shoots good enough but I am a hand loader and know I can get better from the rifle. I am planning to play around with the 150grn partition and interlock along with a few other. Mostly just curious what everyone's favorite is!

One of my favorites! With a tough 150 gr bullet she will be just fine. Either of those options will do the job. I would select the one that gives her the most accuracy. I personally use A-Frame, Oryx, or TSX family for almost everything these days, but your two will be fine as well.

The TTSX is on my list of bullets to try along with the CX from hornady. Admittedly the Oryx was a bullet I had forgotten about and will likely try if I can find them. I would like to try the A-frame as well, the fact that they are rarely in stock suggests they hold true to their reputation! I may try the scirocco in place of the A-frame simply to add some swift bullets into my collection.

This is a copy and paste from Nathan Foster's site ballisticstudies.com. In these two paragraphs, he discusses the 150 gran partition in the .270 Winchester. I have killed everything from jack rabbits to moose with my .270's and believe the cartridge is fully capable of taking the game you have described. With that said, I think Foster's writing is spot on.

My personal favorite is a hoard of BBCs- but for presently available bullets where big tough game is involved I prefer the North Fork SS. They are available in .277 130 and 150 grain. I believe they are the best bullet on the market- solid base, lead core and ringed shank.

Shot plenty of Kudu, Wildebeest and smaller with nothing more than 150gr PMP in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Interlocks and partitions will both work just fine. Many animals fell to round lead balls and or spears not that long ago.

@KoedoePoesPienk we tend to over think this stuff, not to mention, over discuss it. I appreciate your insight. As I was reading this, I realized my last kudu in the Eastern Cape was with a borrowed .270. I cannot recall what the PH's handloads were.

I really like the .270 Win with 150gr Partitions. I use RL26, Nosler brass and BR2 primers. I get 2980fps, or something like that and outstanding accuracy.

Took a nice bull moose at 370 yards two years ago and a good size mule deer buck at 409 yards. The bullet still opened up nicely and did a good job. Shot the moose behind the shoulder and recovered them from under the hide. I can't imagine them not working on PG at normal range. I've posted these pictures elsewhere but here they are again:

I’ve had excellent results on African Plains Game with the 270 Winchester and 150 grain Nosler Partitions or Barnes TTSX’s. We’ve shot kudu, sable, topi, zebra, warthog, impala and other game I don’t recall at the moment with 270’s and never had any problems at all. It’d be great with Terminal Ascent bullets, I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot any plains game animal with that bullet in my 270.

Hornady 130 grain CX better than 3 shot 1 MOA in my rifle & drops big wild pigs on the spot with a well placed shot. I have never recovered a bullet yet as all have executed at ranges up to 240 meters.

Attached (as jpg scans; 1024x) is an older article by Finn Aagaard about the 270 Winchester. It's a little dated now, when it comes to bullet selection, but I thought it still might be of interest. I've always respected Finn's comments and opinions about various cartridges.

"Finn Aagaard (1932 - 2000) was born to Norwegian parents and raised in Kenya, hunting from a very young age. He became a dedicated professional hunter and he pursued that career until it was outlawed in Kenya in 1977."

The article is from the book Hunting Rifles And Cartridges (1990) by Finn Aagaard; a compilation of articles by Aagaard on weapons and ammunition.

I've never owned or hunted anything with the 270 Winchester cartridge. I do own a stainless Ruger M77 Mk II in 280 Remington but I've never hunted anything with it.

Cheers! Bob F. :)

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
