A buddy traded for a ruger tang safety 77 in 220 swift.
Said the guns probably 70% condition and has a 1-14 twist barrel.
He asked what bullets to use for deer
I told him don’t.
I am not sure what bullets it will stabilize. I read a few post and the limite seams to be around 50gr
I can’t think of a 50gr or under 22 I would use on deer.
I think money wise he did ok on the traid.
But I don’t think it will be a good deer or hog rifle.

Yup. This is the ticket. I have also used the TSX in .220 Swift and .224 TTH. The TTH is 1:8 and handles 70gr.+ well.

I know a number of people who used 55gr bullets on a lot of deer in the 70's.

But it isn't a round that I would feel comfortable with shooting anything larger than a coyote.

My brother has that very same rifle.

It does an excellent job of turning prairie dogs and similar small animals into fajita meat. I wouldn’t use it on deer or hogs.

It is short enough to stabilize in a 1-14" twist. The cartridge was the 6mm Remington necked to .224. The customer was particular in shooting situations- always broadside and not running. He did very well but his rules of engagement were more than a lot of hunters with .270s would want to follow.

That is what was later marketed as the .224 TTH. It will lay them down quickly.

40 gr. Cutting Edge MTH. Use them in my 222 at 3600 fps. Really long tracking job of 5 to 25 yds. In the 220 swift, your mileage should be better!

If they had a Safari solid around 60 grains or so I wouldn’t hesitate. It would shoot clean through an elephant skull.

I’m not saying I advocated, but in a pinch I think you would be just as safe as with anything else. Remember, Bell shot hundreds of elephants with a MS 6.5 x 54 with round nose Military full metal jacket bullets.

Yes but he was able to shoot flying birds with a rifle
And running zebra head shots with a pistol. I think 10 out of 10.

How many hunters can do that today?

It's actually a good caliber for muntjac/ barking deer. The Winchester Super X 50Gr pointed soft points are excellent.

A doe here might run 85- to 120 lbs on average and a good buck 125-to about 190 lbs

Oh, not more than 35 pounds live weight. Terrain is hilly. You American gents will probably know them as "Barking Deer".

A 17 hornet will work with a head shot dosent make it a good one.
I know another guy that did depdation shoots in Ga.
He used a 22-250 said it worked grate in the lungs and heart.
I ask what happened when he did not hit right.
Said he didn’t care he was payed to get them out of the peanuts.
Yea I guess it worked for that.

You know I guess a 22 will work when everything goes right.
But my kind of luck with a 22 I would have one of the few 200 lbs ones show up and offer a shoulder shot only.
Or a huge boar show up.

I have had hogs come out that o would only take a hart shot on because I was thinking the 6 mm might be a bit small.

Many years ago, I used a Sierra 55gr Spt out of a .22/250 on an exotic goat. It took three well placed shots to put it down at ~75yds. Never again would I use a .22 on anything much bigger than a coyote.
