In their London showroom, I held both a royal and their round action. I fell in love with the latter, it seemed alive, while I found the former just unwieldy. But probably I'm not yet experienced enough with double rifles.

At £129K ($164K USD) for the Royal double (non-round body) and POR for the one you like...I'll stay in my lane. I don't have to ask or need to know.

I'm definitely only considering the "affordable" German and French doubles that don't cost as much as an exotic supercar.

I'm planning on buying a rifle off a shelf at a retail store (assuming it fits right) so I hopefully won't have to deal with an extended wait.

Why would you exclude a good used rifle?

I'm sure you could get an excellent British vintage double rifle for a similar pricing as a new Krieghoff.

What I did, was light up a balloon with a few gun store owners that specialise in high-end hunting rifles, to give me a call when a good used .500 NE comes by. Then you wait.

Haha yeah I was going to include that. Just wasn't sure if they were the price of a Corvette or a Ferrari these days. I know most, if not all would be well into the 6 figures USD.

I got a price for a new Purdey double rifle in 2020. The price was A$400,000 before any extras ( eg non house style engraving ). All taxes paid . The price of a new Bentley Continental ! I bought a second hand H&H Royal , Purdey and WR double for a fraction of this price.

That is what I did, I chose a Heym 89b in 450/400 and the whole experience of getting a brand new flawless double was very special. So too has been the ownership experience, running it in, getting to know it is very rewarding indeed.

all depends what your budget is .. there are some very good deals to be had ..
Here is a VC chambered in 470NE ... Barrels are a little short for my taste but the stock at 15" can be shortened to your LOP Hopefully you are right handed as the grip probably has a palm swell and at 14K I would buy it before a many of the other Rifles mentioned
Not knowing your budget There are many great deals on used English Doubles if you know where to look whose handling characteristics far exceed the lesser priced doubles for the same price new

I’ve seen pictures of this rifle and absolutely love it. It’s from a premiere manufacturer and the perfect cartridge for a client hunter without going overboard. Meaning not too much felt recoil while still having lethality on elephant and buffalo. Classic British lines in a Teutonic production double.

@Northern Shooter - There are several beautiful and well cared for used DR’s out there looking for a second (or third) chance at getting back in the game. Otherwise you are looking at a wait time for some of these companies that is over two years.

New isn't always the best route. At the same time, buying used...you may end up with someone else's problem.

Double rifle education can be expensive if done after the purchase. You really need to know EXACTLY what you are getting and that's tough. It can take years to acquire the necessary knowledge about what actions work best, who makes them, how to know if there were problems in the past from just a picture...etc. Having a friend with such knowledge would be a big advantage in this area.

Not to mention the regulation process that will be required and range time to do proper testing. It's a big undertaking to have it done correctly. The best deals are from those that have done all this work and are giving up hunting with a DR and have something that you are looking for. I know there are a few AH members out there who may fall into that category.

If it were me, I'd start with my budget and go from there. Have some cartridges in mind but I wouldn't be too concerned about the difference between a 470NE and 500NE because the game is unlikely to know the difference. Better to concern yourself with the inner workings of the firearm and making sure it's safe and reliable...then if the gun is good, look at the cartridge it shoots to see if you are willing to commit to it.

Agreed.

Not to take away from @Kevin Peacocke 89B, but the lines on the K-gun and Heym 88B are just my style. Add in the cocking device on the Krieghoff (or Blaser S2) and it’s even better.

I have enjoyed my Rigby 500NE for well over 25 years. I had a bit of input as to regulation, stock dimensions weight etc. I’ve taken a number of buffalo and plains game with it.
I think if I were to buy today, from what I’ve seen, would get a Heym.

Chapuis doesn’t do a 500, they just do the .375, 450/400 and 470.

I believe the current 2024 MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) is the same as MSRP. On a new Elan it’s as follows
450/400 - $14,049
470NE - $15,499

Wait times for a factory ordered gun are 12-18months based on the conversation I had with one of their reps and a dealer. It took over a year for my 470. I believe they took a slight price increase last year. In 2021 when I ordered mine, MAP was $14,499 on the 470. I know there are a few new ones out there at certain dealers for this price. This leads me to believe they might be New Old Stock from a prior year, but without talking to them I can’t confirm.


I know a dealer either a VC Round Body - CCH in 500NE that has it listed for $16,500. If it wasn’t too short for me, I’d have already bought it.

Yep. I was ready order one two years ago. The sales guy told me 6 years if I was lucky. At 65 at the time I decided to go with the el cheapo Rigby a year later due to delivery schedule being much shorter.

By comparison, a Holland & Holland Royale .600 Nitro Express sidelock ejector costs “Only” £179,000.
