Forgot — model 70 is .375 h&h. That gives the . 404 and .416 and .470 and .500 fans more info for critiques. Bring it on! I’m seriously curious.
Just what are you curious about? You like new guns, I like old ones that need a new life. It's natural for an old man to want to make things young again. Like conquering Time.

I built my 404J on a standard action Mauser because I was told it couldn't be done. But I knew Jeffery did it. So I accepted the challenge. Why not use the brain God gave me? Living is about learning to solve mysteries.

I’m curious about the mindset of the contributors to this thread who appear to be so enmeshed in the mind numbing minutiae of guns and bullets and gunpowder and brass and fps and focal planes and length of pull etc etc etc etc etc —do they have time or interest in life outside the scope of the shooting world? I thought I made that clear in the initial post on this topic. If your whole world revolves around one area I would remind you that life is short and we are each allotted a finite time on earth so perhaps it would be smart to expand the horizons a bit outside of the world of firearms. Maybe good enough is good enough. ??? Maybe I’ve gone whacky reading these hyper technical posts that seem kinda silly. Factory stuff works well these days,

Sorry about the lousy picts .
Ontario , to answer your question , I’ll have to take the action out of the stock .
Jack , the bolt will close over 3 rds but a 4th can be inserted deep enough that the bolt will push it , controlled , into the chamber .
Loaded rounds eject properly.
Weight 8lb , 2oz .
Bottom metal commercial mauser 98 ?
Thanks for the reply and all the pics. I like the rear aperture/Scout scope set-up.

An 8lb package like yours is perfect for hauling around in rural Alaska.

And yet here you are.

Obviously you're not a rifle crank. .... So why not turn off your computer and go watch the FIFA playoffs. :A Whistle:

Thanks Jack-- I think I'll get a beer and go watch Andy Griffith. If anyone else does that we can start a thread on the firearms in Andy's office rack-- rifles and shotguns. I wonder if the bolt rifles are crf and what focal plane the scopes are?? ARRRGGHHH! And while we're at it-- what about Barney's pistol?? Is that .38 adequate or should he upgrade to a .45? A .40? A Sig? A Glock? A Beretta? Should he be issued more than the one bullet he carries in his shirt pocket? Hollow-point or wadcutter? HELP-- I'm melting I'm melting....
