Does anyone have experience with the .17 WSM rimfire? As far as I know only Winchester and Savage produce rifles chambered for it and only Winchester makes ammo for it. I think it will have a future similar to the 5mm Remington but it sounds like a round I’d like to try out.

I have one of the early Savage B-Mags in .17 WSM, tack driving shooter. I got one for shooting gophers but have switched to a .17 HMR mostly due to the cost of the ammo being about half the price, when shooting 400-500 rounds a day on gophers the price difference adds up! Biggest difference between them is that the HMR tosses a gopher about 2 feet into the air and the WSM tosses them about 5 feet up when hit just right!
I have shot and still have an ample supply of WSM ammo from both Winchester and Federal, I preferred the 20 grain rounds. I think it might be a good round for some of the night critters in Africa. On gophers here in MT it is accurate out to 150+ yards

I have 2 Ruger (one blued standard barrel one heavy barrel stainless). Have mostly used only on
Sage Rats in Oregon and prairie dogs at home. definitely more power than an HMR and in my guns more accurate. I have 2 Ruger in 17 HMR with basically same configuration. All the WSM ammo is made by Olin no matter what box it is in, the first batch of Federals were about 100fps faster, the 2nd case was the same as other brands. I like the 20gr loads but the 25gr are very effective on crows, skunks, foxes, etc. Ammo has been hard to get since covid but has recently became available in Winchester boxes for around 0.38 cents per rd. The WSM is effective on Rats & Pdogs to 150yards or so compared to the HMR of roughly 100y.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
