Good stuff there. I took a very early No. 1A 30-06 as my only rifle on my recent (first) safari. Though a neck shot warthog and shoulder shot kudu both took finishing shots not one of my family's 10 animals got out of sight after the first shot. I also just bought a No. 1 Tropical in .458 WM that matches my '06 perfectly.

Nice
I've picked up a tropical in 416rem and that's going out next year with me

Are you going to hunt a buff with it? Both of the PHs we hunted with said they'd have no problem with me using one on buffalo. I did figure since I'm not using a repeater I'd get one with a bit more wallop than a .375...

Appreciate that. I have an engraved No. 1 B that would be an awesome candidate for such a project. Have sent them a note.

Matches your '06 perfectly but for being a lot heavier and kicks about 3 times as hard! I love the No.1's but the big boys give me a headache rather quickly.

Looking at the Renner rifles, you can see where the forward end of the comb is lowered creating a more straight comb with less drop aft, but it allows one to bring their face down more in line with the sights. I had to get a lower front sight from Ruger recently as I could not get my face low enough on the comb to even get close to getting the front bead into the express V of the rear of my .275 Rigby. Ruger obliged at no charge btw.

I don't know what is wrong with some of their design control. I fully get lowering costs, but I picked up one of their new plastic stocked twenty-two bolt rifles the other day, and it was impossible for a human being to come anywhere close to being able to use the open sights. For a kid's starter rifle, that is just dumb. It would imply that no human being ever shouldered the thing before it went to the marketplace.

I love their old rifles and revolvers- the new stuff not so much. Anybody know where I can get an express style rear sight to replace the factory sight on my .458?

I'm more thinking of a Hippo if I can swing it when I'm out there next year but a buff would work just as well I'm sure
My mate may be selling his 458wm and his 450/400ne and I'm tempted if they come up being honest

And your right Ruger rifles are no where near as good as they used to be at all it's more a numbers game with them now it's like manlichers they aren't a patch on the older ones I wouldn't have an SBS one given to me

I shot my new .275 again today and it continues to impress me. I had loaded up a box of 140 Hornady SST's test loads with Reloader 19, and then dumped the box over and half the rounds were all mixed up!:cry::cry::mad::mad:Tried to weigh them as best I could but its unrealistic to think I got anywhere close.:ROFLMAO: In the end it shot well anyway, more I think a case of liking the components very well than any other one thing. I will try that combo again and try not to knock the box over afterwards!!:eek: I do think that Ruger barrels are better now than ever before, even if sometimes their QC seems to suck in other ways. Every recent made No. 1 I have shot was a good shooter, whereas in the good ol days, barrel quality was hit or miss. They outsourced barrels earlier on and now hammer forge their own and they are uniformly good.

I'm curious if you've heard anything back yet. While I like my No. 1 rifles pretty much the way they are I have a M-77 in .350 RemMag that might benefit quite a bit from their services.

No answer to my email or voice mail. Typical of most gunsmiths and gunmakers. I think they all were secretly born wealthy and don't really have to work. ;)

Go figure - he just called! Hell of a nice guy. I think we have a deal.

I usually don't mind a gunsmith that takes a day or two to call back. I always think they must be busy turning out customer's guns. Did he say how long the backlog is?

Whiskey 1, try NECG (check their website), they have a range of #1 specialty open sighting systems, and quality ones.

Well the .458 No. 1 is off to the gunsmith soon but it's not NECG for sights or RJ Renner, yet. It's for a new stock thanks to FedEx...I bought this rifle for the wood and found out it also had a pretty rare checkering pattern only done in '74-75. So pretty much impossible to replace exactly.

I'm thinking now that the original stock is gone it may become a .458 Lott or .450 NE 3 1/4" since it's no longer factory original anyway.

And the work by RJ Renner would be perfect on a .450 NE....
