Hunt Report: Elephant with Buzz Charlton, late-season Maitengwe, Zimbabwe

Great write up, awesome hunt and photos, and always good to have a sprinkle of good luck/fortune added in. Congrats.
I definitely felt very lucky. I just felt bad for Mr. Bob from Wyoming, who was such a great gentleman but sadly only saw 5 bulls on his hunt and did not get a chance at a shooter (he was in camp right before me). Hoping he gets a great bull with his next hunt.

And have to admit, I truly love to see that even with the gorgeous, fancy new Rigby Shikari, that Buzz is still toting around his old trusty Heym 500.
Buzz loves the Heym and said it has served him very well. The Shikari is unfortunately tied up in Zim import bureaucracy and is still in impound in Harare; I was disappointed I didn't get to see it, especially the Croc engraving on the stock oval! I'm pretty sure he'll put it into service next season.

Great bull! Great write up!! Great photography as well!! Fly camp is awesome. BTW love the hat!! Brand??
Thank you. Believe it or not, that hat is 27 years old and has now been on six safaris! Originally made by Priest Hat Company, Idaho, and then cleaned, re-shaped and re-steamed three safaris ago by O'Farrell Hat Company, Santa Fe, NM. Good beaver fur hats are a great investment. I read recently that quality beaver fur actually stays cool even in hot temps, and that has been my experience as well.

The hat band is a puff adder that we killed on my first safari years ago.

By the way, after my double rifle was blooded, we felt it was appropriate to give her a nickname: Mudiwa.

Shona for "Sweetheart."

One of the coolest parts of the experience was when we were riding in the Land Cruiser back to the fly camp, after the successful conclusion of the hunt. The trackers and government game scout started singing in celebration of the hunt. Buzz told me they only do this for success on lion or elephant.

That's when the emotions hit me... Man what a great hunt.

Again, can't say enough about Buzz and his team and the great Maitengwe staff.

Congratulations on an amazing hunt. Glad everything worked on on getting the rifle in time. It was great following along from the start of the build to her first blood.

What’s in store for her now?

Well done sir, I know what you mean about walking up beside an elephant; my first African animal was a tuskless and when we walked up to it I thought “now that’s big game” only to be later humbled when I walked up to another hunters dead bull.

Congratulations. Fantastic hunt, thank you for sharing, love the hat as well.

Very well done! I see how that Ele is deceptive with the splayed tusks! Congrats on a great bull!

What do you think now of Elephant hunting! Have you already made plans for another!
