Vetting Outfitters And Shady Practices

You misunderstand the entire situation based upon gross and negligent misrepresentation. That's all that's going on here. Paint the ph as the bad guy regardless of the decisions made by the hunter and the others in camp.
I don’t think the PH should continue highlighting a controversial decision. He’s actively painting himself in a certain light. It appears achieving personal goals with the client’s money.

Him posting that just 5 days ago is pretty wild given the situation.

Following your head coach analogy, maybe it is time for him to head to broadcasting booth?

Analogy might work if the Cameraman and PH saw the same number of lion hunts per year like a ESPN Cameraman and a head coach each see 17 games a season.
In this instance when the PH was questioned how many lion hunts he’d done and how many were successful after trivializing the cameraman seeing 5-8 per season; it “doesn’t matter he’s not licensed” was the response. When pivoting to comparing experiences with the other PH commenting who was also deleted, being told “none commented and I didn’t delete any”, to which I offered to publicly post a screenshot of said comment and I was also suddenly deleted and blocked.

Since I’m still deleted/blocked and can’t see the post referenced. My only question is does the collared lion have a big ass scar on his right rear leg in the quad area?

This is like an ESPN camera man telling a head coach of an NFL team what to do.
My welcome wasn’t to get more comments on this thread. I had nothing to do with encouraging @AndyMac to sign-up as a member.
I was only hoping to encourage him to post and contribute some additional threads that I think would be of great benefit to AH. Maybe on some other hunts in Africa, giving insight into some of the lesser known/hunted places and species, maybe a thread on charges, or what he believes to be the most dangerous species in Africa.

This is a very interesting thread. I have only been on one African hunt - June 2026 - Greater Kruger and Northern Limpopo with Ernest Dyason and Spear Safaris. It was amazing. Was it perfect? No. Are any of them truly perfect? No. Would it have been better if we had closed the deal on an Eland? Yes. Am I 100% satisfied? Absolutely. Would I recommend Ernest and his outfit? Yes, with both my words and my future hunting dollars.

I think the theme of this thread was intended to encourage AH members to be diligent and careful when choosing how and where to spend your money. There are most certainly examples of misleading marketing out and I believe this is going to become more common as AI makes it much easier and tempting to do so. I share in the opinion that it is 100% wrong and deceptive. I am also sure some of those same outfitters have had hunts where their clients were completely satisfied and would offer personal recommendations. I, personally, would disqualify any PH who uses deceptive marketing from consideration because I view this as a symptom of potential bigger issues. Be thorough and ask many, many questions.

With regards to the much discussed lion hunt, I am sure that most PH's, if truthful, would admit they have misjudged game many times and likely made in the moment poor decisions as a result. For me, it's less about that than how it is handled after the fact. I do admit that it would be incredibly frustrating to have a legal lion opportunity passed and then not have another. Again, I have direct experience in Africa regarding this but have experienced it several times on North American hunts.

One last thought... I have made my living selling big ticket items and continuing service to countless customers over 40+ years. Our businesses have made plenty of mistakes and we work hard to make things right when we do but I will remind everyone that the customer (client) is not always right and there are plenty of folks (both customers/clients and business operators) out there who will slant the story in their favor if things don't go their way. As the old saying goes, there are three sides to every story... Yours, mine and the truth.

Now, time to get back to planning the next African adventure... Choices abound...

I do not know who @AndyMac is but having my last hunt filmed, I gained a world of respect for these safari cameramen. These guys experiance hunt after hunt in many locations with many different PH's. This gives them broad reference data on which to judge other hunts, PH's, and clients.

I have to ask where does deleting all posts that aren’t in full agreement and blocking hunters fall in your characterization of gross and negligent misrepresentation? I’m not sure who he is pandering to with the Instagram posts, but controlling the narrative seems especially important. I don’t know his motivation to continue highlighting the decision. It seems to be serving his own ego, beyond that I can only guess. I had nothing but a high opinion of him before this incident, but this particular incident borders on fraud to me. I hope there are lions on the reserve he actually would have hunted and wasn’t selling a ghost hunt, but it seems more clear he has conflicting priorities.

There are a select few that have more experience than many PHs. If you look at who they film for, who they’ve hunted with, the situations they’ve been in they have a much more broad experience than many PHs. I haven’t met Andy or his brother either, but the reviews I’ve heard from top PH’s should earn something more than a dismissive response of “you’re not licensed doesn’t matter.” Hopefully there was more than that.

@etsonaut you are correct the goal of this thread was more about doing one’s due diligence.

We can all find examples of misleading marketing or bait and switch which most of us would characterize as shady but finding that before a hunt is tough. In my initial post I wanted to include a situation that I felt was a little questionable and raised some flags for my and would impact some of my vetting questions. I admit I only have/had one side, I was trying to get more of the other side when I was deleted and blocked. I agree and acknowledge there are 3 sides to every story. I knew not everyone would agree with my assessment (based on the story I heard) and that most looking into a lion hunt would never know because of how the narrative was being controlled, which is what really struck me and made me post. On AH however, it’s been the hunter/hunting party’s narrative not the PH and members like @jswitzer and others are trying to share some of the opposite.

My take away from the entire situation was; to ask more questions. I realized there were questions I never would have thought to ask such as
“As a PH would you pass a lone legal male because you think he might be a pride male, with no pride present or additional evidence at the time other than dark stains on his hind legs?” Or “how do the stains differ on a pride male from these other legal males you’ve shown me that also have dark stains?”

Are we really going to pretend like that male didn't just get collared?
Please explain jswitzer how collaring a male lion, in a HUNTING area that was on its own and met all the legal requirements to be taken as a trophy helps defend the question of this being a shady practice? Also, i cannot see the instagram post you have attached because Morgan Potter blocked me after i tried to have a conversation with him after he posted a picture i disagreed with. You compare me with an ESPN camera man and pretty much accuse me of telling the "head coach" what to do. That is not the case. I never tried to tell anyone what to do. With 20 years of accompanying many of the worlds best Professional hunters in most countries you are able to persue lions, and being a hunter myself with a family history of over 50 years of big game hunting experience, i have never experienced a hunt like the one in question, and simply want people to hear another side of the story where my comments, observations and thoughts will not be deleted when i have questions of my own.

In your opinion was the lion that was collared and the lion on bait indeed the same lion? What about the lion he posted following the female. If they are the same lion could you tell us how you came to that conclusion? If they are different lions, in your opinion, could you tell us how you came to that conclusion as well?

Even if they are the same lion isn’t it also possible that the lion took up with the female after the hunt in question?

In the instagram post he says it has been identified as the same lion by matching whisker pattern and facial scars. There is no mention of the scar on the haunch that was a difference between the one on the hunt and the later picture.

I cannot see enough of the lion that was collared to make a 100 percent accurate call on whether it is the same lion... but the massive scar on the back right leg of the lion following the female( the post i was blocked and my comments deleted) is in my honest opinion NOT the same lion we had on bait and was turned down. The time that had past between the hunt and that photo with the female was way to short for a scar that size to have healed for those who might say it happened after the hunt. Im sorry but i will forever have a hard time believing a word that Morgan Potter says after he deleted my posts and then denied doing so.

I’d like to know what clever name was given this now collared cat.

I’ve got a suggestion; “Lottery” or “Lotto” for short. Everyone pays, but the ones pulling the numbers are the real winners. And, from my point of view, it looks like someone was picking the winners and losers.

Thank you for the LIKE on my old post. It brought back memories as I lost her a year and a half ago, at 18+ years.
