Pictured here next to a .308 Winchester. It uses a 670gr heeled bullet in a 378 Weatherby case that's cut at the shoulder. The OAL ends up the same as a 6.5 PRC, so while it may theoretically fit a short action, I think the bullet profile (or lack thereof) would prohibit actual function.

It came about because Lee couldn't make a crimp die short enough for the actual cartridge I'm working on (the case cut to 1.4" with the same bullet) so I had to make as long of a dummy as I could. I bet it would put out some power though!

Here is the actual cartridge next to a .45 Colt, I'm calling it the ".585 Magnum Opus". It's going in a Maximum length Ruger Blackhawk.

This really looks great...I would like to see a video where you are shooting this beast :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Interesting creation. (a shot on the shoulder with that sure ought to get a critters attention!)

I am interested to hear how it shoots and what velocity you end up loading it to.

You must have a much higher recoil and pain threshold than I do, as I tapped out after shooting a cylinder of full power 454 Casull loads.

The Casull is certainly one of the harshest recoiling out there. This will run at lower pressure so it should level the playing field just a touch.

Have you got custom dies figured out yet?.... i have a similar project i am working on (gotta find a shitty standard action with a magnum bolt next)

Hornady said they shouldn't be an issue at all. I'm going to be sending them brass, bullets, and dummies as soon as the ATF gets back to me.

Anything over .510 caliber qualifies as a destructive device without approval. Over email they said it would likely fit a sporting use exemption but I had to submit a written request to make it official. Should be hearing back any day.

Do you load black powder 45s? I’ve been toying with the notion. Does 40 grains fit in solid head cases? I’ve heard that was only for the old balloon head.
I do! The case capacity may vary a little 38-40gr but 40gr is the original cavalry load. They lightened it up a tad when soldiers complained of excessive recoil (compared to 38’s and the like they were used to). The only trick is to use linotype or soft lead bullets and BP specific lube like SPG. If you’re going to store them for awhile, I use a thin card and then a thin felt wad over the powder to keep the lube off the powder. I’ve loaded and shot 1000’s of rounds of BP 45LC loads. I even loaded some 45ACP once for use in a Webley (it worked). Then I shot a stick of same in a Thompson and it was… unique and attention getting.

I like it! The cartidge reminds me of the really large bore 19th century pistols.

I also like the idea of using black powder. That will keep pressures mild while still giving plenty of power. I have shot some very silly black powder guns in my day... Don't underestimate the amount of recoil this thing will generate!

Thank you for the LIKE on my old post. It brought back memories as I lost her a year and a half ago, at 18+ years.
