I was fortunate enough to harvest a White Rhino this fall in RSA and was wondering if people use the real horns or replicas on killed rhinos. I am getting the skull and a replica for that bit was planning to use the real horn on a shoulder mount. What are thought and opinions from guys that have killed one, use real horn on mount or get replica and lock real horn in safe?

When I harvested a White Rhino last year I was strongly warned by literally everyone involved in the hunt to use a replica on the mount and put the real horns in the safe. The reason I was given is that on the black market a rhino horn is the most valuable commodity in the world on a per-ounce basis. Thus, criminal organizations will not only poach rhino horns but will break in and steal real rhino horns from trophy collections. I have not done the research to know if this is true, but I am not taking any unnecessary chances with my horns.

Good to know I’m on the fence. Great rhino by the way it’s quite a feeling to harvest them with a double rifle isn’t it?

Congratulations and as mentioned yours is a great problem to have. How about some pictures.

That's awesome. Beautiful trophy. The outfitter I use in the Free State has a lot of Rhino on their place and does a lot of hunts. More than my budget will allow. I can take a bunch of buffalo for what they cost.

I love rhino. I don’t know what your hunt was like, but for me, it was the pinnacle of my hunting career. Congratulations and best of luck with figuring out your incredible dilemma!

My most sincere congratulations. Rhino is the second of my B5. I know and understand your feelings.

Thank you sir!!! What do you have left for the Big 5?

Lion (I’m biding my time and am on a call list. It’ll come.)

Buff (had several opportunities. Waiting for “the one”)

Ele (probably will be the last of my 5) I want a big bodied bull from Bot/Namibia.

I’m only just starting on my journey.

Congrats on the rhino! I need a rhino and leopard to round out my dangerous 7. As for what I’ll do with it, I’m not sure but more than likely use a replica for a shoulder mount and display the horn

Yes, I’m doing a replica for sure to go on the skull and really leaning towards using the real horn on the shoulder mount but I have a few years to figure that out lol

I would highly encourage you to put the actual horn in a safe. Or , better yet, you are going to not (wink) import it at all. For you and (especially) your families welfare. This is the WWW. after all.

Just consider it.

Been a few years and couldn't verify it but a taxidermist had a set he said was worth $950k. Agree put the originals in a safe.

I’d use replicas on the mount and put the real ones in the safe or on the skull

I’d use a replica on the shoulder mount and use the real in a desk mount because I think those are cool.

As for being stolen I wouldn’t post pictures or tell people on the internet I had it. I believe that criminals will target them but I also don’t see how they could know you have have it if you don’t talk about it or post pictures online.

Noah,
I might be interested in the 470 Woodleigh Softs if the price is right for the entire lot. Are you planning on going to the Tulsa Gunshow in November? If so, perhaps we could meet up.
