Marocchi/Tikka Model 512S Over/Under Double Rifle

My plan with this rifle is to create a plains game/ Elk etc rifle. If I can get it regulated and hunting accurate to 300 yards then it becomes very usable for most things, not necessarily for Dangerous Game. I put a much better 4-12x 42 Vortex scope on it today. I have some high quality ammo coming from Aria Balistic Engineering 286 gr Speer Spire point 2375FPS. We'll see how it likes it. My question for the group is has anyone ever regulated the barrels? Im just looking for tips before I dive in....

There is a Valmet 412 on GB right now that started life as a 3006 and has been rechambered to a 300 Win Mag. The seller doesn't state such, but if you look closely at the open end of the barrels, it is obvious they ground off the "6" and hand scratched a "W" to turn "3006" into "300W". I think it would be excellent to have a 300 Win Mag double to go with a bigger DG rifle, but I also think the 9.3x74R will shoot as far as I am likely to need a rifle in Africa, and will do a better job on big game than the 300 Win Mag. That said, it would be handy for REALLY long shots, and I think having a scope physically alligned with the bore of one barrel is one of the things that makes the O/U double superior to the SxS double for long range PG hunting.

Ive been to the range a few times to regulate my Tikka 512. Its much harder that you would think. The individual barrels are very promising but its amazing how touchy the adjustments on the barrels are. It took me 2 range sessions to figure out that you shoot top and bottom twice and before you move anything with the screws you have to let the barrels cool completely to ambient temperature then make your adjustment. It seems that when the barrels are warm there is stress in the barrels and when its suddenly released things move in directions you wouldn't expect, also both screws affect up and down movement as well as side to side. Im slowly getting the barrels to regulate. I had to order more of the same ammo so hopefully ill have more to report in the next couple of weeks. I should note also that you want to just zero your scope in the middle of the two barrels at your chosen distance. It does no good to try to zero one barrel. Every adjustment moves both barrels so Regulate your barrels then zero your scope. Another tip is the very first thing to do is find the ammo your rifle likes best by best groups for individual barrels then use that ammo to regulate the rest of the way. So far its been an expensive learning curve.

Based on your target i would try a different ammo before adjusting the POI with rifle adjustments.

I have a Zoli O/U (Non adjustable barrels) that shot similar with Privi but when I shot it with Hornaday 286 and swift 286 factory ammo the 4 shots tightened up into a nice 2 1/2 in composite 4 shot group.

I have a Tikka 412S model. .308/.308 with an additional 20ga/20ga set of barrels. I have had very good luck with mine as far as regulation goes with both 165gr and 180gr factory loads. I stopped fiddling with it once I got to a respectable point of accuracy, focusing on the top barrel, which is dead on at 100m. The second barrel is also accurate, but knowing that it would most likely be used for taking a fast follow up shot at a moving target, I wasn't too concerned with pinpoint accuracy.
I bought mine to be used for a fly in Moose hunt in order to have both rifle and shotgun, but still make the weight cut off. Nothing bagged but a few partridge with the 20ga so far, but still happy with it.
A little drop of loctite on the screws should keep your hard earned accuracy in place once you find the sweet spot.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
