Leaving September 29th returning October 24th. Hunting with Riaan and Henk of Bosveld Jacobs Safaris.

Been thinking about this trip since I started hunting Africa 20 years ago and planning it for last 2 years (Since my last Safari). For those that are interested, I’ll try to report all the planning effort and details that got me to my flight today out of SFO at 5:00pm.

Hunting with Henk Jacobs in Moz.
Hunting with Riaan Jacobs in Bots.
Hunting with both brothers Riaan and Henk in SA.

I’ll be hunting:
Buff in Moz - Coutada 10.
Ele in Botswana - Tule Block.
PG in South Africa - Waterberg Mountains.
In that order.

I’ll be looking for interesting PG, more Tiny 10, small cats, Hyena, and anything else opportunity presents.

Bringing my Left Hand SAKO 85L in .375H&H and my Left Hand 450 Dakota. I’ll report on bullet selection and load development later.

Not sure about you before a hunt, but I could hardly sleep last night. Up till 1:30am double checking my paperwork, gear, packing list, and thinking about this trip.

Flying Emirates through Dubai with a 3 1/2 hour layover to arrive at JNB at 5:30am. Morning I prefer to arrive in Joberg in the am and not stay at a safe/guest house and waste another day… Plus Emirates is one of the best airlines in my opinion.

Airlink to Beira. 12:55pm from JNB. A little layover where Henk and I will have time to catch up and do some planning.

More to come…

Like you, when I have pre safari jitters I feel like a 5 year old on Christmas Eve!

Enjoy, be safe and keep the wind in your face!

Looking forward to following along. This will be epic!!!

It does sound Epic. We will all be looking forward to your hunt reports.

Sounds like a great adventure. Since you were a transfer passenger in JNB did you avoid All the SAP permit stuff and clearing through police station?? I’m considering the same route and was just curious. Thanks

You’re going to enjoy a truly stellar safari. If Coutada 10 is anything like 9, you’re in for a special treat. You are correct, Emirates is truly a superior option for African travel. I hope you’re in either Business or Premium Economy, as both classes of service are excellent.

What are you flying on from Beira to C10 with Safari Air? We flew both the Caravan and Islander to/from Beira and they’re a very different flight. Caravan high and fast, Islander low and slow but a great short field airplane. If Steve is your pilot (he flies the Islander) you’re in very good hands as he’s an excellent pilot.

SAPS still required -I’ll hunt SA in the Waterberg the last few days of this Safari. Also Moz Permit. Plus Emirates Firearms Request Form. Then a Botswana Permit.

I used Gracy Travel. Have since 2007. Very helpful! Great service. I often book my own flights, but was happy to use them again…

Gracy helped with several permits and the Beira Flights.

Debbie and staff are top notch!

Made it to SFO…

Thanks. It’s starting to sink in. Not sure of our flight out of Beira. Arranged by Bosveld Jacobs.

I got the same seats I always get:

Pro Tip:

AMEX Platinum - Reimburses for Clear, Global Entry, Priority Pass and gets you into other lounges including Centurion Lounges. Plus a bunch of other perks and good points…

Nice not to have to wait in lines…

I also broke tradition and brought a 2nd larger checked luggage. I usually bring only 1 Carry on and 1 Backpack then check my rifles in 1 case and my ammo in a pelican case that also holds some miscellaneous items.

Henk shipped boots and a scope to my house through suppliers in the states and asked me to bring them. So I am bringing those items plus about 40-50 new ball caps for gifts. All different branded hats: from hunting, fishing, gear, and a bunch I’ve received from vendors, subcontractors, clients, projects, and charity events…

So I also put my ammo in that checked bag. In a small pelican case.

Pro-Tip 2: If your airline has a weight requirement for ammo like Emirates does (5KG/11lbs) take your ammo out of the locked box and weight it separately. Assuming it is in contained in 20 round plastic boxes like mine.

If I had not weighed it separately. I would have been over - due to the weight of the carrier box and locks on the box. They may ask you to set the whole box with locks on the scale with ammo inside, but technically you are weighing the ammo, not the ammo, lock box, and locks.

Weighing the box and locks with ammo inside would have me going with potentially 10 - 15 rounds less…

It matters if you need to re-sight your rifle due to an incident, or re-sight for conformation after a miss, or plan on doing a lot of hunting.

Enjoying my first Bourbon and Coke (Zero) in a while…

At The Club lounge. Pretty nice. Good throw back design and vibes… Just need a little Jazz flute. Decent food selections and good bar overall.

I probably should order a Harvey Wallbanger or Tequila Sunrise next!

Had a great TSA guy, quick check on my rifles, then Asked me to come around and shut and lock my case and even loaned me a roll of tape to tape down my luggage flap. -it has a strap to secure it, but like putting a few wraps of tape around it and my case for obvious reasons!

FWIW: Emirates airlines agents are so easy to deal with. Had 3 copies of my forms ready and brought me to the front of the line… Then their agent carried my rifle case over for final inspections. I said, “You know that has wheels” but this young guy was set on carrying it. 47 pounds wasn’t much for him I guess.

Nice service…

I think forum prohibits making reference or giving personal references to PH/Outfitters that don't advertise on this forum.

But you can call me. I would be happy to discuss Cape Buffalo .
