I found a hunting game called “Way of the Hunter” on Playstation 5 that is more of a true simulation than an arcade game. If you play at a higher difficulty, it’s pretty realistic. You don’t see animals everywhere. Other than road hunting, you actually have to glass to find them. You judge their quality and have to place your shots.

You sell meat to make money to buy weapons, scopes, various ammo types, calls, binoculars, trespass fees, and pay for your taxidermy. You manage the herds by culling mature animals with poor trophy quality, or younger animals that have misshapen antlers/horns. You can over-hunt, scare animals out of an area, or even under-hunt and end up with poor trophy quality.

You hunt environments in the American west, Alaska, Africa, New Zealand, Romania, and Finland. Each area has different animals and each has its own

The only complaints I have is animals tend to run a long ways if only lungs are hit. Sometimes as much as 300 yards. That, and hitting bone structures other than the spine and skull don’t do anything to hurt the animal. Only hits on vitals matter. I was getting really frustrated with animals getting away after high shoulder shots. Now, I just shoot vitals.

By the way, if you're looking for more in-depth reviews and guides on realistic simulators or survival games like this, I usually check out HermitGamer to find solid hidden gems.

Oh yeah, Way of the Hunter is a great game for those looking for meditative gameplay, not an arcade shooting gallery like theHunter: Call of the Wild, where you can run through the forest and shoot left and right. It really requires you to use your brain, consider the wind and direction, and manage your herds. The breeding system is a really cool idea; it's nice to see your efforts to tend to your lands pay off.

Does it have in game purchases like so many games created nowadays?

It does if you want certain rifles or maps. Otherwise, you sell meat to make money to buy gear and pay trespass fees. The money is based solely on pounds of meat, so I cull older animals of low quality and save the breeding age animals that have more impressive racks or horns. It creates better genetics.

I only use rifles, shotguns, and bows that I can buy with meat cash. There are some gun packages that cost actual money, but there is zero need to do that.

I think it sounds like a really interesting game. I just hate how almost everything in life has turned into a subscription model.

Call of the Wild can be fun. Hunting cape buffalo with a .470 double can be entertaining. It's not totally realistic, but it's entertaining enough.

In Way Of The Hunter, I typically use the 9.3x62, 375 H&H, or 416 Remington (in a double) for buffalo. They will charge when wounded, so that can be a challenge. For medium game in the 300 to 800 lb range, I use the 30-06 a lot. For smaller animals like springbok, feral goats, and deer, the 6.5 Creedmoor does a decent job. You get penalized for using cartridges that are bigger than necessary. You lose sellable meat to damage or the score reflects a lower rating.

You can buy different loads that have different terminal ballistics, or use the free option. Depending on the cartridge, the free load can sometimes be terminal ascents. Sometimes its Fusions. Sometimes its CoreLokts. Just depends. But everything can be purchased with meat you sell.

One thing that kinda sucks is it is really picky about shot placement and you can’t break bones to anchor an animal. It is purely vitals. So, I was doing shoulder shots and having animals run a long way.
