Which scope would you prefer on a 375 H&H Bolt for DG and PG -

None of those. Swarovski Z6 or Z6i 21.7-10x42 with or without turrets.
The scopes you have in the poll have very limited field of view. They are fine for up close shooting but out past 100yds, good luck in sighting your target. I used the Leupold you mention with poor success. I switched to the Swarovski noted and it made a big difference.
 
They are all the same scope. It really depends on you. Some scopes are really natural for me to look through others aren’t. Leupold has always been the easiest scope for me to look through, but my next scope on a heavier rifle will be a Trijicon. I think they are built tougher. I’m also not a huge fan of Leupold’s firedot. I find the larger dot at higher settings fuzzy and don’t like the on off button. I’ve always thought Swarovski crosshairs were too thin that the scope actually requires illumination, but their illuminated dot is very clear and pinpoint. It really just depends on you and what you want to see looking through a scope.

Just my opinion, but proximity is the driver for selecting an optic for DG. Think a 100-yd shot max, and more like 60yds max. You’re going to be close, or at least your PH should be trying to get you close. Heck, for most of the last century umpteen thousands of DG critters were killed using iron sights only.

A 1-6x 30mm scope is magnification overkill as well as weighty. Something like a variable 1-4x with a light 1” tube has the max magnification you’ll need for typical DG engagement ranges …. unless your eyesight is worse than Mr. McGoo’s.

My .404 Jeff runs the now-discontinued Leupy FX fixed 2.5x compact with a heavy duplex reticle. Super lightweight 1” tube and not illuminated. (Obligatory pic below).

Reticles generally are a personal choice but I always liked the German #4. The old Nikon African 1-4x model used that reticle.

I try to go with the muscle memory theory. 10 CZ550’s from 243 to 505. All scoped with Leupold that operate basically the same. VX3 HD to VX 6 HD. The less I have to think about how my guns operate the better in the moment. There are very minor differences, but nothing major or that I have to really think about on them being setup with mostly the same hardware. Even my Tikkas and others have the same glass, except for my thermal and day/night scopes because Leupold does not offer them.

Everything is 1-6x24?

Why?
Day light hunting in the bush, that includes buffalo?

You have no intention of hunting something in the night, or low light conditions, small predators, leopards?

My choice for all round, all conditions PG and DG rifle, scope is: 1.7-10x42. In my case Swarovski Z6.
To have wide angle option in daylight conditions, and some light gathering capability with 42 mm lenses, as all round scope. Swarovski brand or something else is less relevant.

To your point, I use Leupold on almost everything I own for the last 40 years.

Same boring crosshair that has become part of a permanent sight picture in my minds eye,

However I do find that I need more magnification than I did in my younger years and I like the illuminated crosshairs dot on my most recent purchase for dark hide animals.

In below pic I have a 2-10 on my 416 Rigby and have used it for Tiny Ten up to Buffalo.

There’s a lot of good discussion on this thread. A 375 is a very versatile rifle. 1-6 isn’t overkill, but a 1-4 is a potential limiter. Many 375s are too light already, so the scope weight doesn’t hurt. I went from 1.5-5 to a 2-10 on mine. I took buffalo with both and took PG up to 300 yards with both, but I see no practical difference of 1x or 2x at close range (my closest buffalo has been maybe 5 yards early season), but I see huge upsides to having the ability to turn up magnification.

Of course 10-42 will be different so will be the price for a Swaro. My thought is to use primarily for DG and large PG and I do not intend to use past 150 yards. Does that change your line of thought?
 
What just those 3? If it's because you already have those 3 laying around and want help on which to choose - I get it. But if not, where's Swarovski z8i at? Where's Zeiss at? Way too limited.

Interesting, I'm still holding on to my El Paso made Weaver 2.5 X I" scope on my pre-64, good enough to 150 yards, serves me well and rugged.
 
I have used an older Leupold Var-X III in 1.5-5X and would have liked to have had more magnification (and maybe a larger objective) when my PH told me to take a shot on a Kudu late in the evening. We didn't find it until the next morning.
 
None of the above- as well as a different cartridge. My choice would be a 404 Jeffery and a Schmidt & Bender scope.
 
I used a fixed 3x when I went to Zimbabwe. At first I thought that it was great but after a few evening and early morning hunts, I wished that I had a larger objective lense for light transfer and a variable power for Elephant. We got so close to them that the 3x didn’t give me the field of view that I would have liked.
 
I agree with @mark-hunter about limiting yourself to a 1-6x. It’s good for DG and larger PG within the parameters of the .375. However, a steinbok at 200 would be a tough target. I encountered a young coyote trotting along at 100yds with a 9.3x62 topped with a 1-6x cranked to 6x. If it had been much farther, I don’t know if I could have acquired the target.
IMO, Something with a higher magnification would be good.. Trijicon makes a 1-8x and a 2.5-12x. Leupold a 2-10x. Swarovski a 1.7-10x.

99.9% of DG is taken well inside 150yds. From the hunting reviews, so are the larger ungulates in the veld areas. A Leupold compact M8 in 4x would cover all of that, as would a fixed 3x. A 2.5x is plenty of magnification …. again, unless you’ve got eye-myopia.

Heck, Craig Boddington has switched to using non-magnified RDSs on his DG double rifle and, I believe, on one his DG bolt-rifles too.

This fantasy of sniping at PGs, like zebras, elands or warthogs, from 300-yds really needs to be put to bed. Maybe some guys here want to pursue that, but I’d tell my PH up front that’s not the hunting I flew all this way to do.

“Stalk closer” is never a bad strategy.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
