Rolex- the stupidest, lamest company

I finally pulled the trigger on the GMT II “batgirl”. Like I said in my previous post, I’ve wanted one for many years and just never got around to buying one. Originally I was going to buy it for my 50th birthday. The warranty card was dated the day my dad went in for open heart surgery in the latter part of June. He passed away from complications from that surgery on July 17th. It’s been kind of hard to see this watch as anything other than something that reminds me of him even though it wasn’t bought for that purpose. I wear it everyday and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

In my more boring, non-hunting, life, I keep an eye on recent judgments in commercial litigation.

A recent one is Swatch v. Samsung, and involves various brands of the Swatch group (including Breguet, Blancpain, Omega, etc.) suing Samsung, maker of a smart watch. The problem arose that third parties could, and did, produce watch faces for the Samsung watch that copied the trade marks of the various Swatch brands. The question in this case was how much should Samsung pay for this infringement ('quantum'). It is not a particularly interesting question to have answered, but there is one interesting aside from an expert witness, Mr. Forbes, acting for Swatch. He is quoted in the judgment, at item 17:

I did give the example in my report of Tudor and Rolex. If Rolex is the king of the Swiss watch brand in terms of market value, I know from my experience that if you want a Rolex and you cannot afford for the name, you can essentially buy a Rolex watch but it is branded Tudor for half the price. Now, it is not presented like that to the market, but that is the truth behind it.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
