I am referring to both really. Everybody refers to the “Russian” and generally mean the area of both rivers near the confluence. You can park at the parking lot on top and walk down to the trail/boardwalk on the Russian. You can wade across and fish either side of the Russian, up or down. If you walk downstream you come to the confluence with the Kenai. Other side of the Russian at the Kenai confluence is known as Kraut Bank just below the point of the confluence—calling that area either Russian or Kenai- would be correct. You can drive from Cooper Landing down hwy to the confluence and fish the area of the confluence from highway side. All this area around the confluence is famous for many of the combat fishing photos. I’ve fished there occasionally for 35 years. One of my cousins has a place in Cooper landing and is a retired fishing guide. I’ve fished both rivers with near zero competition and during peak “combat” conditions where you almost can’t float through the waders when they won’t yield their spot to inflatables or drift boats moving through. I’ve had lures, flies, sinkers hit bounce off, land inside and slap across my inflatable as I was drifting down through the beady-eyed anglers combat zone there. Gets interesting during peak red flossing season during weekends. Seward/Kenai hwy can seem bumper to bumper with Anchorage residents, snowbirds and tourists, during peak sockeye runs.

Yeah, I've got my fair share of stupid people stories. Plenty of eye rolling.

Nope, I was upstream on the Russian river maybe a couple hundred yards downstream from Pink Salmon parking lot. I typically park there, work my way down looking in spots I know of in between areas with people since I prefer to sight fish passing schools. And if I don't do well down I head up to the upper pools if the run has been going long enough they'd be hanging there. The past couple days have had few people because few realized the second run finally showed. No joke, at 6 AM yesterday I was car #3 in the parking lot. Today there was 10 or so at that time. Word is getting out, but a lot of people have full freezers by now.
 
My buddy, Jim, a good friend, worldwide fisherman and a pronghorn guide for me, just caught what should be the new IGFA All Tackle World Record Arctic Char at the Tree River in the Arctic. It weighed 32 pounds and 11 ounces, 41” long with 23” girth. The current record was caught forty-five years ago and weighed 32 pounds 9 ounces. Once official, Jim’s fish will be tied for 1st place because the IGFA rules require fish over 25 pounds to beat the previous record by 1/2 of 1% or more or it is considered a tie. Pretty cool!

Hey guys! Can anyone suggest a beginner fly fishing combo for various bodies of Southeastern waters for all species? I used to fly fish out of a canoe on East Tennessee lakes for panfish and the occasional bass. I need to get back into the habit for "mental wellness." Hahaha! Thanks fellas!
 
How many bears were on the river?

Hey for panfish with the odd bass mixed in a general 9ft ( or similar length) 6 WT rod would do you well. TFO or the St Croix Mojo series should work well without too much money into it. Echo also has a good reputation. For reels you could go with something simple like an orvis battenkill, or for a bit more I really love my lamson liquid. If you want to go all in on bass and 8wt may be a better tool but for panfish with bass sprinkled in 6 should work just fine.
 
There are several pages on fly fishing “gear” that would be entertaining and mind boggling at the same time. Do an advanced search for “fly fishing” and you’ll have plenty to sort through-
I bought the orvis encounter 5 weight as a kit from scheels for my beginning daughter and she has done well with it.

We had a pretty good day on the gulf a week ago, vermilion snapper, red snapper, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel and a keeper triggerfish.
We were hoping for more triggers and some red grouper but they didn’t cooperate. We did catch a few nice gag grouper but the season for them doesn’t come in until 9-1-26.

Another good day on the Gulf out of PCB.
Amberjack, vermilion, red and mangrove snapper, triggerfish, red grouper and a speckled hind. First hind I’ve seen in the Gulf in 50 years+ of fishing.

Yes, my brother in law has a preferred captain he’s been fishing with for years.
I like Spanish as well, about 3 weeks ago we trolled from the marina to the bait boat and caught 22 before heading out in the Gulf.
 
If you can refer a boat, please do. I'd love to bring a buddy and visit!
 
I've caught 9 so far this summer, but 4 released too small. Up to around 16#, they are really nice eating as long as the belly, from ribs around to ribs is discarded. Its just straight fat/oil. Best tasting fresh water fish in the lake, equal to hurbot.
The day I headed back to "town" for an sppointmeny, my fishing buddy and his grandson went out. Jackson used my ruby-eye and caught this 11 pounder. Jackson is small for his 6 yr. age, but an avid fisherman.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
