Mozambique State Depart level 4 advisories for Niassa Reserve and Pemba

I saw this alert overnight

Just hearing about this too. Google search saying this happened near Marangira village. I have no idea what unit that would be in.

It looks like it was in L7, The one ran by MWA Mozambique Wildlife Adventures.

I hunted in Northern Mexico back in the mid 2000's when crap was very sketchy with the Cartels. I finally decided no animal was worth my life OR worse yet, the pain my family would endure over my hunting decisions. I got out in 2007. Everyone has to make that decision for themselves and their family, but man, this sounds more than too dicey for me.

Best of luck in your endeavors, whichever way you decide.

Gosh that is so frustrating to hear that it has happened again.

Niassa seems like such an amazing wilderness area that I long to go visit one day.

I pray one day this can all be resolved.

This did not happen in L7 it happened to the South of the concession close to a village on the main road. MWA does not have permission to hunt L7.

I will continue to support the efforts of those that are trying to protect the Niassa reserve but am concerned about the recent attack even though this occurred south of the reserve. Until this matter is sorted out and verified information is released an abundance of caution is warranted.

There are conflicting reports and speculation, with finger pointing coming. In July things were great, today not and next week who knows. My hope is these matters get sorted out properly so that the much needed funding provided by hunters and tourists continues to help keep the Reserve from being ruined.

I spoke with someone in the Embassy in Maputo this morning. A small raid by insurgents was conducted on a hunting camp in the north. No hunters were present.

Thankfully, I’ll be 500+ miles south of there next week, on Coutada 9, so I’m not too concerned but my 3 buddies might be another story. Gonna be interesting to see how they handle this news.

This indeed happened at the hunting camp inside a hunting area, not by the road. One South African Assitant PH and one local guy killed. Looting. Torching. Vehicles destruction and theft. The hunters were luckily out of camp and evacuated via helicopter. Close call, what could have happened is horrendous and I deal with it on a daly basis, believe me!

Like I previously sadly stated, Northen Mozambique is deemed a High Insecurity Context for obvious reasons but mostly Cabo Delgado's side. Here is a sad reminder of the ability of the group to act in a wider geographical area with hit-and-run tactics they are so adept at.

There is no speculation at all. Whoever can "guarantee" (and this is a very heavy/dangerous word that I never ever use when briefing my staff on daily movements/security meetings) security in Cabo Delgado, Nampula and/or Niassa either is a lier or an ignorant. Sorry to put it so bluntly.

it does not really matter where they strike, they are highly mobile, know the areas intimately, are undetectable and have a set agenda. For all we know they are back in Montepuez/Nangade or even farther inside Niassa Game Reserve. Or maybe they went South to Nampula/Cabo Delgado border.

I will try to keep you posted for the benefit of those still thinking of going there.

If anyone wants to reach out to me for an honest, down-to-earth, most accurate update I am always open to it.

The area they struck is south of the Reserve along the main road. The hunting camp is about a K off that road.

They are being actively hunted. No one should be sharing those efforts.

Public Information is conflicting with nothing confirmed. Bad situation but lets get the facts.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
