This is an expensive learning curve, but I don’t understand why these keep happening. A 5 minute phone call can differentiate real from scammer in a hurry. They can post a fake ad but they can’t fake being a hunter. I made a purchase yesterday. Turned out he already knew who I was because we hunted with the same outfitter and some of same areas. A scammer can’t hold an intelligent conversation about hunting or shooting.

I don’t know about that, the closest I came to getting scammed on a different notable Texas site, I spoke with the “seller” of a Ruger #1 .458win; he was obviously an older white man and he definitely knew plenty about guns and hunting.

Where he screwed up was being too aggressive about selling it at a low price, couple days later another member of that site is posting about how he got scammed by the same screen name and used PayPal same as he wanted me to.

Fair enough, I’ve decided not to follow through on one purchase here because the seller didn’t give me confidence, but a phone call would safely eliminate 99% of the scams I’ve seen here.

What's funny to me is, I really enjoy calls with sellers/buyers on our forumn. I've always had great conversations with everyone I've dealt with. Most were 20 minutes long or more. I look further to more in the future!

Scam is one of the reasons my preferred payment method is personal check. The mail takes a couple days and in that time if things turn bad I can stop payment. If the scammer cashes the check, I get it back with his/her signature on it and in addition, I have a permanent record of the sale, how much I paid and to whom. No other method has those benefits.

Ray,
Good point. However, I was told that scammers can use personal checks to get personal info (name, address, bank & account number and use that to further scam, Also personal checks can be modified by removing what was written to increase the amount.
I guess that in the world of scammers, there are many ways to steal funds.

375 Fox,
A call may have helped but I have bought things from people that were not that knowledgable.

You have a name and address and sure a copy of the check. Can’t you file a Police Report and/or a claim in the small claims court?

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.

Dan who is C. W. Richter? He seems to not be a fan of myself!
