What four calibres would you choose

.22 of some kind

12 ga combo with dr barrels and shotgun set ( need shotgun set )

.375/ .458

7mm of some kind , or 6,5x55 converted target Mauser with good German scope on .

But I’ll indulge you. The best answer would have to be a Blaser K95 with at least 6 barrels.

If we have to go with single shots,

Baikal single shot 308
Keystone Crickett 22 magnum
Baikal single shot 20 gauge 3”

My original choices were 22LR, 243, 30-06, and 375 H&H. For some reason, if talking single shots, I’d want to make a couple changes.

Winchester 1885 Low Wall w/Leupold 4x in 22LR

Browning B78 w/Leupold 3.5-10x in 7mm Rem Mag

Ruger No. 1A w/NECG Aperture Sight in
30-06

Ruger No. 1S w/Trijicon 1-4x in 375 H&H

I love the spanner you threw into the cogs. Single shots are fantastic things and I've done at least half my big game hunting with single shots of one type or another. My praise of single shots is because they are extremely lightweight, their actions are 4-6" shorter so a full length barrel carries like a carbine, and they come up to the eye for an instant shot. My complaint about them is slower reloading (dangerous game issue) and very, very heavy recoil.

Because of the above, my 4 calibers would stay in the realm of practical and comfortable to shoot.

1.) 17HMR or 22 Hornet, your pick
2.) 257 roberts +p, 250-3000 savage, 25-06, your pick
3.) 7x57, 7x64 brenneke, 280 Rem, or 280AI, your pick
4.) 300 Win Mag, 300H&H, your pick

My biases are in bold.

After 60 years of hunting in Africa where I live I would choose the following 4 utility calibres to cover most all the needs of the average hunter:
12 GA, .243Win, .30-06/or .308, .375H&H
I own or have owned and used all of them and found them very effective. The .243Win for small- to medium-sized plains game with good shot placement and appropriate bullet choice is very effective
 
Single shots?

Fanzoj Kipplauf KB-1 in 6.5x54R.
Blaser K95 in 30R BLASER
Merkel K1 in 9.3x74R
Krieghoff Big Five in 500/416NE*

*Technically a double rifle, but I promise to shoot just one barrel at a time.

I think we have as much access to most of the classics vintage components here in Aus vs anywhere worldwide. Woodleigh, Bertram, Wrightys load info. lets hope they and the gunsmith artisans keep going!

If ammo availability wasn’t a concern or constraint I’d axe the 308 and do either my 257wby or 275 Rigby as I feel there’s no need for two 30 calibers. I might also consider a switch to 300 H&H from the 300WM but would probably stick with the 300WM.

Top end would stay a scoped 375H&H since it’s more versatile than the double rifle I’d like to switch it to.

Glad I live somewhere that this isn’t a situation I need to consider.

I haven’t read through but the AR or any semi-auto isn’t an option for civilians.

I don’t think it’s 4 calibres but some might be restricted to 4 firearms.

For an Aussie let’s start with a .22 rimfire, a .22 centrefire and a .30 cal hunting rifle before considering a shotgun.

That leaves out anything bigger if required.

But if you find a .17rimfire for a little distance or run a thermal , night vision or red dot for scrub hunting you are gonna be restricted at 4. If you hold land or compete in target shooting you might be able to to have more.

One thing is for sure they have not yet shown the options to request a the proposed exemption's under the new rules.
