Maybe someone can help me out with this one.
I have a Williams receiver sight on my rifle now. At the range in good daylight I can use them just fine.
When it comes to hunting with them in the deep woods or in prime time ( early morning, early evening) I can’t seem to see though the sight good enough to feel comfortable taking game.

I’ve been doing some research and came across Turnbull restorations red dot mount they make for the Winchester 71. This mount goes in the same factory holes in the receiver that the Williams sight mounts to. I also have no experience with red dots. I was wondering how everyone thinks this mount/red dot would work for me. Most of the shots I would take on game would be pretty close range, but a 125 yard shot isn’t out of the question.
Anyways, I’ve been looking at red dots, and I’m leaning towards a 2 or 3 MOA dot.

Do you all think that a red dot would be a good option for me? Better yet, does anyone have this mount on there 71?

Oh, and before anyone ask, yes I have my eyes checked regularly, and I do wear glasses.
Thanks in advance for the help

I'm interested in this as well. The eyes aren't what they used to be...

Thank you! I do really need to upgrade my sight system....

I think the idea is fascinating! I was so hesitant about putting an RMR on my double and now I can't live without it. I did it to all of them. Putting one on my custom model 71 may be the next step. My eyes aren't what they used to be either.

Well, there wasn’t a huge response about this red dot mount for the 71, so I guess I’ll be the guinea pig.
I just ordered the mount this morning. I ordered the one for the RMR footprint.

Now, I need to look at red dots. I’m not going to go “high dollar “ for one as I’m not sure if I’m going to like this set up or if it will do what I want it to do.

I’ll keep posting here as this project progress.

NIKE. JUST DO IT.

I have used the Turnbull mounts on a number of lever actions, including model 71's. I collect lever actions. Don't know how that happened, but I have about 50 of them from 25-20 to 50-110.

The base works great

I would not go bigger than 2 MOA personally

I use Holosun's on these.

I use Trijon's on larger big bore's

When you order, make sure the red dot uses the RMR platform

Aim small, miss small

I just bought the Hi-Lux alternative, complete with TD-3C red dot. I won't pretend that the TD-3C is an RMR, but for $250 combined, it seems pretty solid for normal use. Installation on my 1957 M71 was a breeze once I removed the original screws which probably hadn't been moved in 60 years, figure about 10-15 minutes in total. I haven't zeroed the unit yet, but it look very promising.

To the OP, I have one of these mounts on my Browning reproduction Model 71 rifle. I used a Burris red dot on it. I've shot a black bear and some hogs with this setup, never had a problem. I can take a picture of it when I get home (traveling this week). It was simple to install and helps with sight picture. I'm 61, and the old eyes just aren't what they use to be.

My Turnbull mount showed up a few days ago. I haven’t mounted it yet and still need to purchase a red dot.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.

Dan who is C. W. Richter? He seems to not be a fan of myself!
