Tungsten buckshot for leopard follow up?

Don't want to derail the thread, but I was told that when shooting tungsten shot, the recoil is so much higher than a regular shell.
If so, can't imagine shooting a 3" or 3.5" shell loaded with tungsten buckshot would be much fun...

Here is a short of me shooting a 3.5" turkey load of 2.25 oz of #7 TSS at 1200 fps. The recoil impulse was worse than anything else I've ever shot. However, this load is specifically made to hit a small target at distances out to 60 or 70 yards.

This also makes sense from the point of the shotgun I'm using which is similar in weight to what one might use for followup on leopard. Although I would like to see double triggers for completely independent firing systems.


If you were following up on leopard and wanted TSS to do the job, this load from Apex would be very similar to what I was using, but probably more tolerable because of the slower speed and lighter payload. I also brought this point up in post #4 on this thread.

The material the shot is made from has no bearing on recoil. The weight of the shot charge, burn rate of powder and powder charge have everything to do with recoil. I absolutely hate shooting a 2 ounce 3 1/2” 12 gauge load, no matter what type of shot it’s pushing.

A 3” 12 gauge is about the maximum I care to shoot these days. And I don’t bird hunt with those either anymore. Smaller stuff kills birds plenty dead.
 
TSS loads recoil more because it is more dense than lead, so payloads the same size weigh more. More weight similar velocity, more recoil. Just physics. They say when shooting at game in the field, you never feel the recoil. I think in practice I would use similar lead loads at lighter weight, with only 2 or 3 TSS loads per session. This would be MUCH less expensive, and save developing a flinch, or detaching a retina.

You’re not shooting a round of trap with it Russ. And, yes, the tungsten buckshot I have shot out of a 12 gauge coach gun kicks like a son of a bitch. I’m going to be using some( probably one) in a couple weeks on a dog hunt for boar hogs.

@BeeMaa —— WOW the recoil YOU absorbed in that video is IMPRESSIVE. I watched it several times and looks like your shoulder rocked back 12” from the shot/recoil !! Having shot some Sporting Clays with You a few times - I already know your ability to take recoil/punishment is well established but that video had to be PAINFULL ! If there was a “Leopard” on the receiving end of that shot - it would be DEAD but I might also need Medical-attention. At some point I hope we hear from someone (PH——Client) that has actually shot a charging Leopard with a shotgun & TSS…..it certainly seems to have passed the “testing on paper” phase. Question: Do you think anyone could recover from that level of recoil and get off a “2nd shot” on a charging “Anything”? Hopefully the first shot connects and kills the target animal ——-and 3 more charging Leopards BEHIND it !!

That’s funny, in every mathematical equation I’ve ever calculated 1 1/2 ounces always weighed the same whether it was 1 1/2 ounces of lead or wood or cotton candy.

All kidding aside, I get your point that loading with the same bushing will yield different weights for different shot metals. However that’s a volume discussion, not a weight discussion. Load data isn’t calculated based on the volume of a shot charge but rather is always based on weight.

Of course all you say is as correct as it is obvious.

Point is, the safe maximum load for a 9 pellet 000 buck load of TSS pellets, is going to recoil more than the safe maximum load of a 9 pellet 000 buck load of lead pellets. This is just like in any rifle or handgun, the heavier the payload, the more the recoil at max loads for each, even though the powder and velocity will be less for the heavier payload.

If a TSS pellet shattered on a goose bone, it was fractured due to some manufacturing defect or freak pellet to pellet impact during ignition. before it hit the goose bone. Especially considering the distances, and attending reduction in impact velocity with which the pellets strike the goose. That is like telling me a steel ballbearing fractured on a goose bone. I would have to see it to believe it, and even then it would be such an insanely rare anomaly, it would be too insignifcant to even seriously consider.

Send photos of fractured TSS pellets.
