Here is where the .405 Winchester would be minimum, but welcome!

44-40- eh? :) Walking along square bottomed pathways that have been beaten deep over the years where these big bears live, especially if visibility is limited, does give pause. Studying fresh tracks of a 10ft brown bear then looking at your rifle makes you second guess all manner of things like, "This gun is not big enough".

If anyone tent camps in bear country, I recommend reading a few chapters from Larry Kanuit's book, Alaska Bear Tales, under Coleman lantern light. :):)

I have no desire to go up against a grizzly with anything but to be one state away!

44 Mag revolver with 44 Mag loads as a back-up. However, although not used, it does have a 44-40 conversion cylinder.

Marlin 1894CB 44-40, loaded with 240gr lead bullets @ 1,400fps, zeroed in for 100 yards. The bear trail cam video, the bear walked less then 50 feet from the front of the stand at 5:45 am....I am a bit happy I was a tad late that morning!!

Hard to judge the size of this brown bear for a number of reasons. First is the lack of reference. This was most likely done by editing because the picture was taken at some distance and a cell phone was used. This would account for the pixilation and lack of definition...and the lighting looks like it's been altered by some editing software as well. I mean to say that there's a "Tik-Tok" symbol on the bottom right of the photo so probably not top shelf journalism or camera equipment.

I'm not saying this bear isn't a HUGE bear, but a little context or point of reference is needed to be able to put a number on what it really weighs.

Yes, the 405WIN would be an excellent choice for bear, although I'd opt for the extra 1000 lb-ft of energy afforded by using the 375H&H.
My .405 is built on a pattern 14, and pushes a 300 grain Northern Precision bonded bullet at 2630 according to the Garmin

That is a good combo. Are you able to achieve that velocity and still stay under the maximum pressure of 46,000 psi or are you just looking for signs of overpressure?

Most people using a 405WIN are doing so with a lever action rifle rather than your (much stronger) P14. And let’s not forget that you are hand loading, not using factory rounds for this. Therefore most people can’t achieve those kinds of numbers.

What I’m saying is, your example is more the exception than the rule. But still quite admirable. Well done.

@comen
Imagine what you could get a 400grainer doing.

Which is what a .400+ caliber bullet should be starting at.

With the possible exception of the rifle built by @comen, there are too many modern .400 caliber options that far exceed the ballistic capabilities of the 405WIN in every aspect.

There is a reason it was considered obsolete just 30 years after it was introduced. The introduction of the 416RIGBY (1911) and 404J (1905) cemented its demise. The only thing the 405WIN can offer is availability in a lever action for those who want it.

@BeeMaa
He has it built in a P14 Enfield so should be able to juice it up well.

Noah,
I might be interested in the 470 Woodleigh Softs if the price is right for the entire lot. Are you planning on going to the Tulsa Gunshow in November? If so, perhaps we could meet up.
