The .308 is a utilitarian work horse for sure, but also can dress up nicely too. Here is a .308 made by Sterling Davenport:

Here is a .30-06 stocked by Sterling Davenport, barreled by Mark Penrod that I picked up because of the unique carved wood scroll work. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but the point is these old work horse rounds can shine up in the right craftsman’s hands if that is what you desire.

(The big scope is for load workup, a smaller scope will go up top for hunting.)

My two current favorite rifles are both classic cartridges.
1) Ruger African in 9.3x62 with a Leupold 6hd 1x6x24. On Elan, Zebra, Nyala...
- was amazing in Africa, shot buffalo bore 250 gr tsx loads, rifle shoots 1 inch group at 200!
2) Winchester Model 70 Super Grade 30-06 with Tiger Maple stock. Leupold 5hd 3x18. Rifle is a beautiful heirloom in my book.

Woodleigh make a 275 grain and a 310 grain bullet for the 358's. From memory Taylor used the 310 bullet inhis 350 Rigby and said it penetrated as well as the 375, 300 grain bullet.
 
The .30-06 is my go to. That Sako Grey Wolf in my Avatar photo has been all over the world and filled many walls with animals. Ammo availability everywhere, Just the right amount of power for most of the worlds big game, easy on the shoulder, accurate!
 
I've taken plains animals from blesbok all the way to Kudu with my 308 Win. I don't shoot beyond 300 yds, so it's perfect for me. And yes, I have two 30.06s, 9.3x62, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 338 Norma Mag, and more. I don't have a bias toward any rifle caliber, I just pick the one best suited for the hunting environment and the largest animal on my list and an acceptable back up rifle. I swear by them all.

It really is hard to beat the old 30-06. If I was limited to one rifle I guess it would be this cartridge. Just glad I don't have to do that. Even though my wife wonders why I need so many...
