From the Texas Hill Country to Africa (Someday)

FTW Ranch is located in Barksdale, Texas approximately 2.5 hours from San Antonio.

That’s Tim’s place
He said around Liberty Hill (just outside Austin). Burnett is probably 30 min due west along TX-29

Welcome

Glad you are aboard! Let the journey begin!

McBrides is opening again soon. A buddy of mine was just hired to be one of their managers.
When will McBride's open? Hopefully before August 2nd?

Hello everyone, I’m joining from Central Texas.

I’ve been reading the forum for quite a while and finally decided it was time to join. Hunting has always been about much more than harvesting a trophy for me. I’m fascinated by the entire ecosystem: habitat management, wildlife behavior, native plants, water, soil, and how all of those pieces fit together. I spend much of my free time working on our small ranch. I enjoy the process just as much as the hunting itself.

My fascination with Africa began long before I ever thought about taking a hunting trip. Growing up in Asia, I devoured anything I could find on the topic like Death in the Long Grass by Peter Hathaway Capstick, Heart of the Hunter by Edison Marshall, and just about everything written by Jim Corbett. Those authors painted a picture of wild places and remarkable people that captured my imagination.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve sometimes wondered if I was born too late, whether the great days of exploration and adventure had already passed. Reading this forum has reminded me that while the world has changed, the spirit of adventure, respect for wildlife, and commitment to conservation are very much alive. It may look different today, but perhaps that’s exactly as it should be.

Outside of hunting, I enjoy history, photography, and introducing my son to the outdoors. My hope is that he develops the same curiosity and respect for wildlife and land stewardship that those books inspired in me many years ago.

I’m looking forward to learning from everyone here and hopefully contributing along the way. Best -
Welcome to AH!

I’m not 100% sure but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that. I know they’re trying to open as soon as possible but we all know how many construction projects finish on time, especially when dealing with permitting in a place like Austin.

That's fair. Another trip, then.

Any other classic gun shop (safari rifles... not looking for black guns or handguns) recommendations for the ATX area? Collector's was frankly underwhelming.

Collector’s in Houston has a much better inventory on that regard, but it changes. Sportsmans Finest in Bee Cave used to somethings have some medium and big bore rifles.
If you make a trip to Dury’s in San Antonio by the airport you’ll almost always find a few Safari rifles.
Gordy’s in Houston obviously has a pile. There’s also a small shop around Beaumont that’ll have a few rifles and ammo. The Ft Worth Cabela’s gets some used stuff in regularly, and obviously Holland’s Dallas location. After that it’s a complete toss-up. You could walk into most dealers or a pawn shop and find something.

My favorite was always compulsively searching the Texas Gun Trader website then contemplating making a road trip just to meet a guy for one gun. Someone always has a deal on there…

I will have to check out Sportman's Finest in Bee Cave and maybe Dury's. Good ideas!

Now that’s neat. Would love to have a spot where I can reach out and try 1000yds. There was a place called Best of the West near Liberty Hill but I heard it closed down.
Didn't they make rifles as well?

I’ve been on the lookout for a 375H&H. The classic safari express would be awesome. Will be sure to stop by these recommendations if I am in the vicinity. TY

I don’t think Winchester chambers/builds the Safari Caliber Guns all that often. It seems like they come in waves. I’ll see a bunch online and on shelves, then they dry up a bit and you’ve gotta watch the online sites.

If it were me, I’d ask my dealer to try and order you one/wishlist one. I’d also call the shops who typically deal in those guns and see if they have one, or can locate one before driving to see them. You might also be able to give them your name to call if they get a used 375 in.

@csmcclain was kind enough to share this https://texasguntrader.com/category...10/Pre-64-Winchester-Model-70-375H-and-H.html. Too tempting :)
