What Hardware For Shoulder Mounts

I just got word four plains critters I shot over two years ago will be arriving in the US next month. Finally, four shoulder mounts are coming home to hang in my study.

Does anyone have experience with OOK Professional Picture Hangers with their taxidermy? They claim to be rated to 100 pounds in sheetrock. I've used them with fish taxidermy and they've worked quite well! Then again, fish are a lot lighter than what's coming back to the US, and I understand my Kudu could go as high as 50 pounds.

I am definitely open to suggestions and alternatives if anyone has any.

10 dollar stud finder will be your friend.

I would prefer a heavy screw in a stud. But these will work I would think. I used them for some very heavy mirrors in our master bathroom and the mirrors haven’t budged a bit

I used the 18” length for the mirrors.

You don’t want anything falling on someone’s head.

Yep, find the studs and sink a 1 & 1/2" or longer lag bolt or screw. Two of these held a wall mount for a 60 pound plasma tv.

Not a good idea. I added blocking in between the studs for my kudu.

They are a little more expensive but for large, heavy mounts, I don't know that I would trust just a picture frame hook.

A structural screw into a stud, with a Level Rite on the back of the mount. I can't imagine anything easier. Currently I have up 4 African shoulder mounts - blue wildebeest, black wildebeest, kudu, and gemsbok. All have this combination.

As a former fish taxidermist, Level Rites were all I used. The come in many sizes, they are rock solid, and they make leveling a mount easy peasy.

WITH THE KUDU (AND OTHER LARGE MOUNTS) NOT JUST THE WEIGHT YOU ARE CONCIDERING BUT THE LEVERAGE. HAD A KUDU JUST MOUNTED INTO THE DRYWALL RIGHT BETWEEN TWO STUDS, WORKED FOR YEARS TILL I NOTICED THE DRYWALL PULLING OFF THE STUDS. HAD TO GET AN ELK SIZED SHIELD MOUNT IT TO THE STUDS AND THEN THE KUDU ON TO IT.
