New guy here. I've purchased a 458 Winchester Model 70 and now I need brass to reload for it.

I've read where converting 458 Lott brass is just a simple trim and chamfer? I've ready about fireforming 300 Win mag, 338 Win mag etc....

This will be for plinking so the mis-stamped brass doesn't bother me.

What has everyone found to be the easiest/best way?

Many thanks.

If you fill them 4 times, you have 300 bullets for training and 100 com for 100 animals in Africa :):):)

375H&H or 416RM necked up and trimmed works well if you can’t find brass. Either of these is usually cheaper and easier to find than 458 Winchester or the Lott option.

So I found 4 boxes of Hornady 458 Lott brass for 66.00 each. I have a Wilson trimmer from reloading other stuff.
Do I need to order a .458 reamer for the brass since I’m gonna trim it to length?

Also have an RCBS file trim die otw

I have tried making cases from bottlenecked magnums, .264 and 7mm, and case wall thickness was a problem. That is why I bought the .458s.

I'd keep an eye out on the Classifieds section of this forum. I've found plenty of good deals on rifles, dies, brass, etc.

Matter of fact, the rifle, brass, bullets, dies, etc., that I used on my latest hunt all came from purchases I made from guys on this forum.

Huh!? In my ignorance I thought that 458WM brass was easy to find. Sure, 416, 338 and especially 375 might be more common. But reforming from Lott or 264 would seem like making 308 brass from 260 Rem. Or so I thought...

458 brass has been the most difficult to find in the last six months. I declined buying a rifle because of the lack of acceptable brass.

The easiest thing for you is to buy new tires. You buy 100com once and you can recharge them 5 times
Yes, buying new brass is "the easiest" , but that is if it is available and if budget allows for it. I remember when I first got into reloading on my own dime, it took several pay periods and a couple years to an adequate equipment & supplies, and that was over 25yrs ago & the only thing I spent discretionary funds on.
The OP is a legitimate question, especially if brass is in short supply or there is budget restrictions ..... know what alternatives are out there is good preparation & sound logic.

BKS1 , I second what Lance Hopper suggested , those are easier to find in my area. The other is what you already have done, finding used .458WM brass ....

You are on the right track.

However, "plinking" with a .458WM is doable, but finding a workable formula that your rifle setup prefers & perfecting that is more important. Unless you've already done that? Also, developing an alternate formula for when the prefered components are not available.

I am accumulating my supplies.

Just bought a new set of Hornady 458 Dies for cheap.
200 pieces of Brass on the way
Wilson trimmer and trim die ready
Couple of different powders on hand
Gonna use some 350 gr Hornady bullets I have to shoot it a little and see how it goes.
I’m thinking the 250-350 gr bullets would be good for any deer /pigs..

Can’t wait.

As an aside, and I don't want to derail this very useful post, but I had a "back & forth" with a few AH members on the decision of some ammo MFG to halt offering "off the shelf" .458WM. And Hornady has decided to halt selling "new brass" ..... it is a very disconcerting trend.

I wish I wasn't such a smart aleck. My first thought was "easiest way to make brass is to shoot some factory ammo."

kidding aside, I'll send you some if you want to message me your address. I can probably drum up 50-75 pcs of 1x fired Hornady and Barnes, maybe some nickel federal as well. all once fired, all bought and shot within the last 6 months.

Just let me know.

I had no idea 458 WM brass was on the unobtainium list.

Been that way for a year. I'm resorting to using 338WM for my 416T. (Proper head stamp 416T is >$4.00/pc. I'll save that for Africa!). Good luck!
