Rigby PH or Parkwest 404 Jeffery?

I wonder if they have them at the store in Houston,
Might swing by if they do to have a look,
People keep comparing the bare bones Rigby to the Parkwest dark continent! ‍♂️

A fully loaded rifle at a lower price point than the bare bones Rigby.

Even with case color hardening, a splash of gold, wrap around checkering, initials on the estucheon, a Silvers style pad, and quick release Talleys a Parkwest 404 (or 416) is less than the Rigby!

The parkwest also has An extremely tight and precise action as well, the only other action I think is at its equal is the Heym
The Heym I looked at the Sci in 404 was amazing
 
Sort of accidentally I own a couple of Dakota biguns. Ooze quality, perform very well, look amazing. Support is nothing shy of extraordinary. Never shot a Mauser/Rigby, fondled extensively a special edition Rigby, and… setting aside extras, level of cosmetics, they fall squarely into the same tier. Hate Talleys? I can think of a couple ways around that. Took a hard header last time in Limpopo, saved the stock, bashed the scope, I have no way of knowing what moved, but a test firing and small tweaks had me back on zero and hitting spot on at 300m.

Do Talleys suck? I sure as shit dont know.

Offer me a german gun sourced to a brit gunmaker and both their labor costs, plus two sets of tariffs, over a vertically integrated SoDak company?

Talley rings do not suck. They are the absolute finest QD ring and mount system money can buy at $275.

If you want to say that a $275 system is unsatisfactory, you can put EAW pivot mounts on a Dakota/Parkwest. That's the finest QD ring and mount system you can buy for $900.

Or you can upgrade beyond all of this stuff. JP Smithson can make you a double square bridge rifle and his QD ring system for an extra $5000 is far better than all of the above.

A rigby PH is a single square bridge, so its a moot point comparison since they are not conducive to mounting optics. You can do it, but you're talking about a $3000 mount system for a single square bridge mauser. A double square bridge Rigby with EAW Pivots is going to be the nicest QD setup you can get for $3000 or less.
 
I always learn things from @rookhawk every single post of his!!! Stupid me...I had no idea my new not in my hands, yet Rigby PH is a single square bridge. Please let me know what I should be googling for a scope mount please? I am putting a Swaro Z8i 1-8-24 on it.

I could be wrong, but that Scope mounting system looks to be specific to Rigby, not sure tally will work without some kind of adapter,

I personally use Tally’s on my Parkwest rifles and Alaska rings on my CZ 550

That is the Recknagel Pivot mount system, its the best pivot QR system on the market, a set of rings is going to run you $600-700. It is nice they have that built into teh square bridges. You will need an ext front ring and with a Z8 you'll need to mount it high, possibly extra high because of the giant diopter on the z8

Rook, the current Rigby PH models are all double square bridge now…Rigby looks to have dropped the SSB entirely at present.

The PH models folks are talking about here are essentially the same as the normal Big Game Rifle, just with straight grained wood vs base grade 5 on the BGR, and the bolt handle is hard chromed, and then grip cap and cross bolt are matte nitride vs case colored. Otherwise, it’s the same Big Game Rifle. I actually really like the chromed bolt handle. These rifles will take the same Recknagel quick disconnect bases/rings as the other Big Game Rifles.

Or put solid Talley's on it rather than QD. I love Talley rings and don't use the QD.
 
And one of the local US Rigby dealers showed to have the 30mm base/ring combos in stock for $399. I can’t recall which but came across it doing a
Search last month when I was going to buy one of the 450 PH models. Still may, just decided to wait and see if I make it to Texas to look one of them over in person.

I just talked to the owner, and he looked at the rifle since it is not shipping until Thursday, and he said it was double square bridge and yes, it is the PH model. The pictures he sent me are identical to the one I posted. I have reached out to Rigby waiting for an answer. Copying @RIGBY here to see if my friend Frantz can help with the answer so I know exactly what rings and anything else I need for the Rigby PH model in 404J with my wanting to mount a Swarovski 8i 1-8-24.

Further complications...the Swaro Z8i uses 34 rings not 30 or 1 inch. Can I get the Recknagle set up in 34?

I don't know anything about Parkwest. The Rigby has the history and just oozes Africa. I love your choice of caliber but curious why not a get a vintage Jeffery in 404 Jeffery?
 
I have owned both and currently only have the Parkwest. Both are excellent. The Parkwest fits better and I was able to customize it a great deal. Delivery was less than a year.
If they were equal prices, I would still pick Parkwest. It fits and I prefer the Model 70 look similar action to a full on Mauser.
 
Also, the Swarovski Z8i scope on a DG rifle uses 30mm rings. The 5-40x56 uses 34mm rings.

Also, Talley is the only ring I use. No issues, perfect everytime and great service.

I have them on over 20 rifles and 5 big bores.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
