Rigby PH or Parkwest 404 Jeffery?

I would go with the Rigby which you will find has more brand recognition in terms of value...I have found only real connoisseurs of rifles really get the value of a Parkwest and I am in no way knocking their value by saying that.

I’ve had a number of Dakota (still have a couple) and few Rigby rifles, still have one in 416.

I’d buy the Rigby without hesitation. I would like a 450 Rigby at some point, so will likely get it in the PH model as well.

If I found an excellent deal on a Heym Martini, for me a 450 Rigby or Lott, I’d also give it serious consideration as my 2nd choice to the Rigby. The Heym are great quality rifles as well, for bolt gun Rigby gets my nod simply because the ones I’ve had were superb in every way. Super accurate to boot.

Thanks for the reply. Good info. I’ve shot a SxS shotgun for 40 years, so I’d like to, eventually, go down that rabbit hole. However, a bolt seems to be the best rifle for a safari rookie.

Going to The Valley in few years for my first safari. A couple buff and a leopard are on the menu. I’ve narrowed my rifle search to a Rigby Big Game PH or a Parkwest SD76 in 404 Jeffery. Close in price range. I’ve shot a few Jeffs and am set on that caliber. I want a new gun, not something modified by a gunsmith. What are your opinions of the PH and Parkwest? One better (I know this is a subjective question) than the other?

To me a Rigby PH in 404 Jeffery has the perfect blend to of features to pay homage to the working bolt actions of the past while still being a fully modern rifle. I would love to be able to afford one one day.

Well, it is safe cleaning time! This is a pre-Martini Express. I own/have owned numerous pre-Martini’s and no BS, this is the nicest pre-Martini I have seen. This is especially true for the .404s I have seen. Only reason for selling is (hopefully without sounding gauche) I have been fortunate enough to acquire some truly exceptional rifles over the years and several of what I perceive to be great rifles simply are relegated to a life of solitude in the safes. Some of these rifles deserve to get out and play!

LOP is 14 1/4” over .75” pad.
Barrel is 23 1/4” to action.
Recknagel pivot mount...

Thanks! Yeah those Talleys are hard to look at on an otherwise pretty riffle.

I was at Cabelas in Maine one time, and they had a British bolt action, I can't remember who in 7x57 and it had Talleys on it. Was puke medicine. It was a modern make gun, and this was circa 2007-2009. It wasn't German Rigby from that time, I think it was a Westley Richards or someone from Scotland.

I've never handled, let alone used a Parkwest - so can't comment on them. But the Rigby is a pleasure to hunt with, incredibly accurate and is ... well ... it is a Rigby.

If you're talking about buying brand spanking new, 16k Rigby vs a 16k Parkwest,.... Parkwest every time, support an American employee owned company. You'd be able to embellish a Parkwest with copious amounts of finish, can't get a Rigby to that level until you get into 20k + range, that's a big difference. You could actually get a Parkwest Takedown with 2 barrels for around 16k albeit without many embellishments. A Rigby is a Mauser 98 with different lipstick, literally. Fact is you can find the occasional "new" Parkwest/Dakota on the market for 8-10k, or Heym for 12k, Or buy a new Mauser 98 in 404 and have a "Das Original" for less than 16k. I get the nostalgia behind the Rigby name, and if you're willing to pay thousands of dollars of a premium for the name go for it if that's what revs your engine. Or, spend a little over 16k and get yourself a new Jeffery in 404 jeffery, there's an idea.

Oooo. I like the Jeffery idea. I habe never handled one. Can you compare and contrast it to the others in terms of action, fit and finish?

I love all my Dakotas (3). I have bought all of them used. For me, they represent the highest quality of design, function, fit and performance made in the USA. I’m a Dakota man through and through.

All that said; if I were in your shoes and were going to buy that “one dream gun”?

I buy the Rigby.
