You can neck a 25-06 upto a Whelen.
Can't do that with a 243. Up to a 358 yes which is far better use for a 243 case than leaving it originally

In your last sentence above , for the reason you gave, I would change out 223 for 22-250 and 30-06 for a 270, 280, 375H&H. All shoot as flat as or flatter than the 06.

Nah Bob, looks like I may have to slap some sense into you. The 270 is one of the great cartridges. A 30-06 is very good for making, 25-06, 270, 280 and 35 Whelen's from.

If a 308 won't do the job then go to the 300 Roy or the 338's or 35's. The 06 and 300Win are in-between cartridges that those that can not handle 338's and above go to. At least the 300Roy has some decent velocity and is proper flat shooting. :A Shit:

The 277 designation is only 2/3 of a 30-06. It's bastard oddball offspring of the 06.
Doesn't do anything a 25-06 won't do and won't do as much as a 280 or 06.
What's the use of the 270. I can load my son's 08 with 130s to over 3,000fps, 150s to 2,900fps and 180s to 2,700. Even the boring ho-hum 08 is more versatile than the 270.

Sometimes I think it's more the rifle i want to hunt with than the calibers. For deer there are probably a dozen calibers that would work. We each have our favorites.

Whilst I agree with your assessment the 270 in my book is only marginally better than the 243 which puts it in the useless class in my book. Not much in bullets selection. If it wasn't flogged to death and hyped up by gun writers it would be just another almost ran cartridge in my book
The 280 and 06 are both grand old cartridges with class.

The others are 200 yard groups.
So what is the 270 doing that my 25 won't do faster and more accurate with less recoil.

4) 300 WM
5) 50 Cal

This covers every 2/4 leg animal out there. Has factory ammo available almost anywhere.

I once knew a guy who switched from a 300 WM to a 280, in the middle of a hunt, because he thought the 280 was "luckier." Some of our longest arguments are all in our own head.

A no argument three to literally bag truck loads of game? 22lr, 30'06, 12 ga shotgun. (375 H&H if rifles only)

God let us invent guns because it would be boring hearing us talk that much about anything else.

It’s completely in our head. People where I live say a 300 win mag is an elk cartridge but 308 isn’t. Ask them how far the 300 will kill elk, they all say 500 or 600 yards, easy. I then ask, with the same bullet and the 308 doing the same at 350 that a 300 does at 500, doesn’t that make the 308 a 350 yard elk cartridge? They say no…..

Nah. After using a 270 it just didn't do anything for me. My 25 was doing the same job only better.
On thing I will give the 270 I bought. It made a dam fine WHELEN.
