Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

What ever is in my hands when I see that 10 pointer of my dreams standing broadside at 100 yards. That’s my favorite caliber.

BUT if going to Africa and legally required to shoot a shoulder buster .375 as the recoil and muzzle blast can be handled by most shooters. The "4s" will bruise your shoulder and knock your fillings loose and make you flinch.

As far as cartridge performance, there is a lot of overlap there. But, where I live has very diverse environments from temperate coastal rainforest, mountain ranges, to high desert. Each rifle is set up for a specific type of hunting.

The 375 WBy thread got me thinking of my favorite hunting cartridges off all time.

Here are mine:

22 LR
9.3x62 (followed close my a 375 wby--less bark with the 9.3)
450/400 3" (really it was the gun it was in--but was a sweet shooting as they come)

For big game in the lower 48 .375 H&H is my favorite for shooting longer distances ( 200+ yds)
For big game in the cuttins and choppins in the Allegheny mtns no question ,45/70 with 405 gr lead rn . Mine are generally loaded with fffg black powder. A Long shot is 50 yds if that . That load is like throwing a brick . Some deer can run faster than that 405 gr. All shooting in the lower 48

Have you tried 405s with a flat point, a nice big meplat seems to hit a lot harder and do more damage than the old round nose in my mates 45-70.

Mine I cast . Front not point is as flat as Kelsey’s dog after being run over with a cement truck
.457 of flat surface. Nasty for up close shooting

I use a SxS rifle so no feeding problems
I also had Steve Brooks cut me a properly profiled 657 gr .45/70 bullet
It has a point but is all lead.
Quite accurate in a 1.18 twist barrel
Let me tell you , that is a chunk of lead
You really have to adjust elevation Down due to long barrel travel time vs fast lighter bullets

I originally had Steve Brooks cut that .458 bullet mould for my Sharps 45/90
I could fire the sharps , put down the stix go have a cup of coffee before it punched the 500 yd target. That bullet carried enough energy to kill a deer at that distance

I'm another who likes the .45-70. it is awesome on game, penetration is not a problem with the proper bullet! There are actually three levels of pressure and velocity with the .45-70 now. The level for the Ruger #1 will bring tears to your eyes.

Brings it up to nearly 458 WM I believe.

A friend of mine had a Ruger #3 in .45/70 that he loaded to within 100 fps levels of the 458 Win Mag. It was a light little rifle but the most painful part of shooting it was the antique style level that wrapped between the middle and ring finger. Some evil person designed that lever.

Yes i had one for a short time brutal rifle. also had one in 22 hornet that i should never have sold.

The big round nose may hit like a brick but the flat points hit more like the whole bloody cement truck. You don't think 2 bullets the same weight could be so far apart in impact.

The little 358 will handle any of that walks including eland.
@Rick HOlbert loves his 358 loaded with 225gn Woodleigh RNSP or northforks. Flattens anything he shoots at.

22 LR,6.5 PRC and 470 NE. Personally, I'd include my recoil suppressed 340 Weatherby for anything large in North America!
