*When I built my 505 Gibbs Terry Wieland's Dangerous Game Rifles gave me lots of good stuff to think about ....
*I would recommend Bastonge Walnut because it is very dense/heavy if you are trying to reach a target empty weight... which IMHO should be about 11lbs empty ...American Walnut can be chippy and prone to crack with heavy hitters..
*Make sure you have proper stock measurements for your Smith.. Length of Pull, Drop and Cast and make sure to stop by a couple of times while the stock is being finished to make sure the dimensions are to your liking
*Even though they look good and would certainly have them on a smaller bore I went with a Standing Express Sight only and no leafs as they can pop up under heavy recoil...
*If I was building a 500J I would keep the Stripper Clip groove intact and have at least one full clip in my pocket for a fast reload if the gun was shot empty
*A Trap Door Grip Cap to hold a spare front sight that is easily removed and replaced in the field
Zephyr, great advice , thank you kindly..I am building the rifle stock and .500Jeffery myself under the guidance of my Mentor friend , Johan Greyling , owner of JS Gunsmith here is South Africa .
My current 8x68 Schuler I am building..nearly completed is weighing 11.8pounds clean rifle..the 8x68Schuler rifle is fitting me exceptionally well...I have used the same type of dimensions when I build my first rifle , the .375 H&H Magnum...I am using the same design with the 500 Jeffery rifle stock build and in the near future the other two caliber rifles I still need to build the .458 African and the 9.3x70 caliber....
The .500 Jeffery `s barrel is heavier than the 8x68S `s barrel. The dimensions for my stock I will work on as I am making progress with the .500 Jeffery build.
I am contemplating installing a Ghost ring on the rear of the firing pin , dove tailed it like I did with my .375 H&H Magnum build.
That is the reason I want to insert a two or three leaf flip up distance indicators..it is easily removable to convert the sight system to a Ghost ring set up for up-close dangerous game shooting..
Unfortunately I do not have access to any other type of Wall nut except the American Black wall nut wood...
I have Terry Wieland`s book, will read up on it.
The Ghost ring I milled from a solid piece of spring steel..adjustable up/down as well as left /right ..dove -tailed into the rear of the bolt
