Members , here are the components of a .500 Jeffery build:
1X Magnum heavy 24" inch barrel
1x Mauser 98 action ( receiver/bolt/magazine box/bottom metal)
1x American Black Wall Nut blank
Pacmyer recoil pad
V-express rear sight 50 meter , 100 meter and 150m flip up spring tension distance indicators
Buffalo Boss grip cap
Black Ivory fore end
Alkenet root oil rifle stock finishing

This is my own component list....please take part in this discussion, WHAT WILL YOU WANT TO DO WITH SUCH A .500 Jeffery build project if it was yours???

Look like you got everything to start the build. I will add recoil reducer to the but and add weights to the fore end. Sling swivles..Barrel band. Threaded barrel with thread protector if you ever deside yo add muzle break for sighting in and practice.

My aim is to build a robust heavy rifle stock. The barrel is heavy already at 24" inches. The knox is 100mm adding more weight . The design of the rifle stock will be a straight sweeping back rifle stock design to negate recoil.I first need to complete the build before I want to add components to reduce recoil...After shooting it myself will I think about the necessity of adding recoil reducing components

While it is being built source enough brass, dies, and projectiles.
Krish
Absolutely...I am fortunate to have access to a .500 Jeffery reamer ...re-loading dies , brass cases , bullets I will cast myself ...I can do my re-loading at the gun shop where I am working on my own rifles I am building , the dies/brass is available at the shop

If it is magnum mousar 98 action, the chancess are it will hold 4 rounds in the magazine. If not if you want 4 in the mad bolt closed, then it will need gun smithing work.

To give you some ideas. I am currently customizing two rifles one is a .458 Lott and the other is a .404 Jeffery - both CZ-550's. The .404 Jeffery is intended to be a fine-looking classic safari rifle; the .458 Lott is intended to be a rural Africa swamp/jungle gun.

-Three position safety on both
-Barrel band sling swivel on both
-Shorten the barrel to 22"
-Smooth out the action
-Replacing both recoil pads (Red Silvers on the .404, 1.5" Limbsaver on the .458)
-Replacing the wood stock on the .458 Lott with a CZ factory laminate stock, thanks @whiskeyhunter
-Jeweling the bolt on the .404 Jeffery
-Adding an ebony forend on the .404 stock
-Cerakoting the .458 Lott

I would probably add a mercury recoil reducer on a .500 Jeffery, and I would consider porting it as well.

It will take 3x rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber..if a hunter is not able to put down a buffalo or elephant with 4x 500 Jeffery rounds then he should considering asking some one else to do the hunting for him..

Beck thank you kindly, your input and suggestions really is appreciated very much. It seems you are keeping yourself quite busy (y) (y) (y) (y) (y) The barrel bands will be fitted as well on the .500 Jeffery as well on the .458 African ( next build)

LIST OF MEMBERS `S COMPONENTS TO THE .500 Jeffery Build :

I want to keep the barrel length at 24" inches ..the 3x position safety is a great suggestion.

I have a .505 Gibbs as well. It's a CZ-Safari classic. It came with 24" barrel, and I have not shortened it yet. I generally like shorter barrels on my safari rifles, but must admit the recoil on the .505 is so brutal that I am considering leaving that barrel "as is"

I had a CZ 550 .500 Jeffery for a couple of years. It was a bit too much in recoil, I sold it and brass dies, bullets to an AH member who went on to take a nice buff, up close and personal.

It came with a mercury recoil reducer in the stock. Given my thin frame I need all the recoil reduction I can get.
Weighed 10.7 pounds unloaded. another pound would be better.

If you can ship the barrel to the US for a Magna Port job, I sincerely suggest that, to make a second or 3rd shot quickly.

If i was building on a standard M98 action, I would have a custom drop box single stack magazine. My CZ 550 built on the Magnum action was a tight fit with three cartridges in the staggered magazine and the second round did not always feed properly. The new owner was clearly made aware of this. He had it tuned by a knowledgeable big bore rifle maker.

For sights, I would have a rear bridge mounter ghost ring peep sight, and a green fiber optic barrel band front sight.
A barrel band sling swivel, dual stock crossbolts, full length glass bedding,
an reinforce the wrist of the stock with threaded rod epoxied into a more open shaped wrist.

Beck, for sure this was my idea precisely. I knew if I keep the .500 Jeffery barrel at 24"inches , it surely will assist in counter weight /balance . I weight my 8x68S today , clean rifle , came out at 11 pounds and 8 ounces.
The reason being I increased the duplicator templet`s width , comb height a lot more than the standard Mauser stock dimensions..I will do so again when putting the .500Jeffery templet into the rifle stock duplicator ...I need over size dimensions, removing only necessary wood from the rifle stock..

I have added a rifle stock magazine inserted into the butt of the rifle stock..that might accommodate at least 3x .500 Jeffery rounds ..will add more weight as well. If you need more you can you can fit a canvas /nylon sock housing more extra rounds

4 in the magazine means the gun is not chambered till it is time. The gun is safe till it is going to be shot. Lot of people call 3+1. I like all in the magazine bolt closed comfortable.

*When I built my 505 Gibbs Terry Wieland's Dangerous Game Rifles gave me lots of good stuff to think about ....
*I would recommend Bastonge Walnut because it is very dense/heavy if you are trying to reach a target empty weight... which IMHO should be about 11lbs empty ...American Walnut can be chippy and prone to crack with heavy hitters..
*Make sure you have proper stock measurements for your Smith.. Length of Pull, Drop and Cast and make sure to stop by a couple of times while the stock is being finished to make sure the dimensions are to your liking
*Even though they look good and would certainly have them on a smaller bore I went with a Standing Express Sight only and no leafs as they can pop up under heavy recoil...
*If I was building a 500J I would keep the Stripper Clip groove intact and have at least one full clip in my pocket for a fast reload if the gun was shot empty
*A Trap Door Grip Cap to hold a spare front sight that is easily removed and replaced in the field

Zephyr, great advice , thank you kindly..I am building the rifle stock and .500Jeffery myself under the guidance of my Mentor friend , Johan Greyling , owner of JS Gunsmith here is South Africa .

My current 8x68 Schuler I am building..nearly completed is weighing 11.8pounds clean rifle..the 8x68Schuler rifle is fitting me exceptionally well...I have used the same type of dimensions when I build my first rifle , the .375 H&H Magnum...I am using the same design with the 500 Jeffery rifle stock build and in the near future the other two caliber rifles I still need to build the .458 African and the 9.3x70 caliber....

The .500 Jeffery `s barrel is heavier than the 8x68S `s barrel. The dimensions for my stock I will work on as I am making progress with the .500 Jeffery build.

I am contemplating installing a Ghost ring on the rear of the firing pin , dove tailed it like I did with my .375 H&H Magnum build.
That is the reason I want to insert a two or three leaf flip up distance indicators..it is easily removable to convert the sight system to a Ghost ring set up for up-close dangerous game shooting..

Unfortunately I do not have access to any other type of Wall nut except the American Black wall nut wood...

I have Terry Wieland`s book, will read up on it.

The Ghost ring I milled from a solid piece of spring steel..adjustable up/down as well as left /right ..dove -tailed into the rear of the bolt

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
