Thank God for The Wellness Company; pack doxycycline

Is that rash from the tick bite?
Yes, AI explaination:

African tick bite fever causes a rash because the Rickettsia africae bacteria infect and damage the endothelial cells lining your blood vessels. This systemic vascular infection triggers an immune response and inflammation (vasculitis), leading to the characteristic spotted or bumpy skin eruption.

These side effects are exaggerated. Unless you are really fair skinned most people won’t have an issue especially from 100 mg/day. Take with a meal and Put on good sunscreen then there are no side effects.
@375Fox sorry to say but your above post is just not true!
We have had this discussion before if you recall.
When I worked in Africa, as an overland drive I had at least half a dozen passengers that were not fair skinned that came down with the side effects discussed above. I also had the side effects whenever I took it and I’m by no means fair skinned. Had a client from Tonga that needed to get off of it. By week four he just couldn’t go into the sun. We had him in gloves long pants long sleeves closed shoes by the time we got to vic falls. Took him up to the local surgery there and the Doctor told him to get off the Doxy. He prescribed him something else which I can’t remember now, but I think it may have been Lariam.

Doxycycline is a great drug for a lot of Africas hidden dangers. But it does have side effects that can and do effect not just the fair skinned.

In the two and a half years that I did the job I had with well over 300 passengers and that’s not even counting the other overlanders and there passengers that we often ran parallel with. The shortest trip was 15 days the longest 77 so I got to see what the side effects were on a lot of the main prophylactics that we used at the time. Doxy was the most used (Lariam had gone out of favour due to the side effects it threw up psychedelic dreams. Was not a good one to be on if you are on anti depressants).

Guys ask your doctors before you go don’t just take the advice here. Everybody is different and your reaction to these drugs can and do vary!

I remember your report. I think many of us would get severe sunburn coming out of winter in March and offshore fishing. I think doxycycline gets blamed when it’s due to other factors. I got heavily sunburned on my left arm this year until I changed sunscreen brands mid hunt both 50 SPF.
I lived at 9 north for almost three years and got a bad burn once. Kwanza river is 9 south so I should have been ok with sunscreen but I'm almost fifty years older. That may have been a factor. The tops of my feet and backs of my hands felt like they were on fire. I just got off two weeks of doxy for a wood tick bite and been outdoors quite of bit with no ill effects but now at almost 40 north. I tell my buds, most white men don't belong in the tropics.

I am lucky that I am not allergic to Doxy and have minimal effects from sun when taking it. I have taken it quite a few times without any problems. I do know several people that are highly allergic to it.

I stand by what I said. The side effects are exaggerated in most individuals. After 4 weeks or 77 days, I could believe there is some sun sensitivity, but there are very few hunts that long. It’s easier to blame the doxycycline than blame a new environment with stronger sun and not using enough sunscreen. I will say by the end of my 28th day post hunt after returning home my stomach has had enough though.

You're probably right, but as someone who can burn in a strong moon I'm very cautious about anything that can increase my sensitivity even slightly.

Fair enough, but I look at it as the Malaria option with the least side effects that can also prevent tick bite fever.

Hell of a way to spend a glorious hunting day in SA; sick in bed with tick bite fever from my Zimbabwe safari 2-1/2 weeks ago…

Good thing is, the lodge I’ve been hunting in has been so kind, called a doctor, sent him a pic of the vector bite, he was scripting me doxycycline and the camp owner was going to send someone to fetch it when I told them I had doxycycline in my emergency med kit.

My Zim PH did a super job educating me on what to look for with symptoms and then this morning I knew…

Don’t matter how careful one is with treating clothing. With a wet season like they had here this year all over Southern Africa, it only takes one bite. Achy joints (back, neck and knees on me), headache, fever and an unsettled stomach. Flu-like symptoms mostly, but easily misdiagnosed by google doctors.

Glad I came prepared.
I do not leave for Africa without it!

If anyone has met me, they know I'm as fair skinned as it gets. I've been prescribed Doxy for various issues over the years, and sun sensitivity isn't an issue for me while on it.

Shucks, that sucks man. Sorry to hear it and hope you have a speedy recovery.

I’ve had malaria about 7 worthy times in my life, but the worst of the lot was when I got both malaria and tick bite at the same time. I was man down for months. Wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

Take care bud!

My only trip to Zim, I told my doc, my Ph recommended I have a doxy prescription incase and she had zero issue writing one up. I didn't have to take but I'll never go with one!

Yes everyone is different when it comes to reactions to different antibiotics .
After getting a fishhook through my knuckle as a charter boat captain and having to take another charter the next 60 days (GD federal government and their 100 day derby for red snapper) I ignored the warning label and got a blistering ( even with (70 spf ) , then I blistered my hands and legs when taking it as a malaria prophylactic. I just have to take precautions now, because I sure don’t want tick fever again! Or malaria and never ever again will I take Mefloquine !!
Consult with your physician about your tolerance to different medications and whether you are allergic or have sensitivity to them,

Take heart! Many a fine adventurer has returned from the bush with some form of ailment. Can’t catch that stuff surfing the couch. Still sucks though, hang tough.

Yeah feel your pain not great. My reaction to doxy and the sun is it feels like someone is running a magnifying glass over my skin, you know how you set paper on fire with one.
On a side note I had dengue and malaria at the same time and that’s not a fun one to be repeated. Spent a week 10 days in a local clinic in Dar getting well enough to get back on the road. Man the Quine sure makes your ears ring. They also gave me an old Chinese drug called Artemisinin which I had to have injected into my ass every 24hr, was great for a fire side laugh.
Artemisinin is comes from a herb sweet wormwood. Also helped move on some worms I’d picked up as well. Fun times.
Some of the natural stuff is very good especially if your on extended stays in the tropics as you can’t live on prophylactics which doesn’t help your kidneys.
Before you go start a course of Vitamin B1 helps prevent mozzie bites.
Echinacea I found was another good one for boosting the immunity of your stomach.

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
