What four calibres would you choose

I’d have the exact same choice and logic as @mdwest if I was forced to pick just 4. The 223/556 would undoubtedly have to be an AR though.

If ammo availability wasn’t a concern or constraint I’d axe the 308 and do either my 257wby or 275 Rigby as I feel there’s no need for two 30 calibers. I might also consider a switch to 300 H&H from the 300WM but would probably stick with the 300WM.

Top end would stay a scoped 375H&H since it’s more versatile than the double rifle I’d like to switch it to.

Glad I live somewhere that this isn’t a situation I need to consider.

I hope I’d never have to choose 4. If I was going to pick 4 from a practicality standpoint it would be 223, 308, 300 win, 375 H&H. If I had to cut my current rifles down to 4 then it would be Tikka 223, Model 70 243, Sako 85 300 win, Sako 85 375 H&H.

I’m not really a fan of exotic or rare calibers. I prefer reliable, proven cartridges that I know work well and that I can find ammunition for almost anywhere.

My choices would probably be:

4 rifles:
-.30-06 for stalking/rececho and also driven hunts. Honestly, I would choose it because of its versatility for almost any hunting situation and species.
-7mm Rem Mag for the same role, but with more reach and more stopping power if needed at longer distances.
-9.3x68 for monterías, driven hunts, boar at night, and stalking larger animals.
-.416 for dangerous game.

If limited to 3 rifles:
-.30-06 for stalking and driven hunts in Spain.
-.338 Win Mag as the most versatile caliber for all types of hunting and species worldwide, thanks to its combination of power, authority on game, and long-range capability.
-.416 for dangerous game.

If only 2 rifles:
-.30-06
-.375 H&H

And if I had to live with only 1 rifle:
.375 H&H For me, the closest thing to a true universal hunting rifle.

If shotguns had to be included in the limit, I would replace the .30-06 with a 12 ga shotgun in any of those setups

I am going to come at it from the angle of if my choices are limited, ammo or components might be as well.

.223
.308
.338 Marlin Express
.45-70

These represent calibers from what I already own. Also, on the .338 ME, have a lifetime of ammo, so no worries about it being an oddball.

I'm from the great state of NSW Australia and in their wisdom the government of said state wants to limit the average licenced shooter to a limit of four calibres.
I'm not entirely sure if that includes rimfire and shotguns, for this exercise we will only limit to centre fire.
My four calibres are

22 250
30 06
9.3x62
404j

Should cover anything I want to hurt anywhere in Australia and overseas

Let the fun begin

Rob
So simauto is out there?
22 mag
6mm rem
35w
And. 45 70

20 Gauge
6.5 CM or 308 Winchester
223 or 204 Ruger
7mm PRC.

If shot guns don't count.

308
223 or 204 Ruger
7mm PRC
375 ( I guess, but for Australians it is bloody difficult to travel with firearms), so I guess it would be a Sambar rifle.

As for moving to Queensland, no public land, really flipping hot. Crocodiles in the ocean and in the rivers.

NSW/victoria
Public land, not as hot, no crocodiles in the ocean only great whites.

Would pick my current selection of cartridges for the R8:
- 6,5x55
- 7x64
- 9,3x62
- .375H&H (for DG where 9,3x62 is not legal)

+1 with @SETH RINGER and @Houston Bill

If shotguns aren't included in the four:

4 out of my inventory::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure:

Tough 4th choice: 32-20, 44-40, or 22 Hornet
Definitely:
30-06
340 Weatherby Mag
458WM

But I'd be looking for a loophole T/C Encore Pro Hunter, or similar bolt or double gun with multiple barrel/caliber options. It only becomes a rifle when barrel(s) is/are attached to a lower receiver.

22 hornet (bolt or single shot)
300 norma mag (custom bolt action 7-7.5 pounds unscoped)
35 Whelen
416 rigby (bolt action)

Covers from rabbits (and not just killing but actually having something left!) up to Cape buffalo, including a 35 caliber that’s legal for Iowa deer hunting with less drop and recoil than the rigby. Swap for a 350 legend or other straight wall if you want to hunt in other straight wall states.
