458JCE & the B&M Super Shorts

This is the trip (SEP 2012) where I tested North Forks and the 458JCE - this Red Ox with a 450gr SS from my Lott. Simon estimated him as a ton of beef (1000kg). Didn't know someone had beaten me to the Northern Territory with these "pipsqueak" cartridges :E Laugh:
Hmmmmm......Not sure mine is bigger, but he is damn sure OLDER........... Yep, that was 2012, Paul had 4 shooters, myself, Sam, Matthew, Mark David......... and we did some shooting, not sure that we took home any ammo........ LOL...... And smartass thought he has to shoot too, but he was shooting a new double and I think he missed most shots....... anyway, he told us when we arrived that 500 NE and a double rifle could not kill buffalo at all anyway........ he had two guys before us that could not kill a single buffalo with their 500 NE's............... bullets bouncing off of them.......... I think he just used that as an excuse so he could shoot, especially after he shot my red skin for no reason at all.......... or shot at it I think.......... HEH HEH.............:W Sub Machine Gun:

This is one of the oldest I’ve seen bar one other.

Thumping Red Skins Sarg.

They're tough animals.

When we removed the head off this one we found a spinal bone lodged in its throat.
The throat was mostly blocked and the bone had been there for some time.
I have no idea how it survived with that bone lodged in there.

Who’s spinal bone was it, I’ve seen Brahman cattle eat a lot of bait station horse meat & even pig bodies, imagine if my photos fell into the Indonesian meat buyers hands ?

I found this in an old Bull, God knows who shot or threw it into him !

Let's make it 2 - 1 for Sarg and one for me! I'd love to have a crack at a 500 :p
To my knowledge, there's only one full sized .500 in Australia and that's in my grubby little hands.

.450gn brass CEB #13 @ a mild 2450fps.

& seeing @michael458 loves the big old ones I’m sure this one’s up his alley lol
Indeed it is so, and lots of nice flat rugs I see above..........

Some of you know, but I suffer from Macular Degeneration, leaky blood vessels in my eyes. I get regular injections to hold it back. In May of 2024 I suffered a leakage which caused a grayish, wavy, blind spot in the right eye, center left. Anytime before, after some injections it would clear up, but not this time, it is permanent. I am right handed as well, and try as I might, I cannot shoot rifles left handed, arms and hands are stupid, they do not know what to do or how to do it. So I was screwed until last fall, when I finally discovered I could mount a Red Dot type sight high, tilt the rifle to the left on my right side, catch the sight with my left eye, which is still functional at this time. I don't care for just Red Dots, very partial to Circle Dots. Even before the eye issue I used a lot of the Vortex Spitfire sights, green or red circle dots, and is etched into the glass, so even if the batteries go dead (which I have never had one do that) then you still had a black sight.

Believe me, I have been busy since last fall figuring out how to make this work for me. I have set up several semi guns to suit my requirements, and now a few bolt guns and lever guns as well. I am very happy that I can at least get back to shooting semi normal anyway. Which brings me to this, one of the bolt guns I wanted to be able to shoot is my Earth Tone 458 Super Short. I put a Votex on it, and I am almost ashamed to show it to you it is so stupid looking, but it allows me to be able to shoot right hand, left eye. Believe me, as stupid as it looks, I love being back in the game.................so I am happy as a pig rolling in dung..........

:E Excited: Awesome that you found a solution Michael. Anyone tries to tell you it looks stupid just flip 'em the bird.

I'm VERY left eye dominant but shoot right-handed and I have a pacemaker in my left shoulder, so shooting left-handed is not an option. I may play around with your solution but currently my effective shooting solution is to close my left eye.

Last September I found myself going to Tanzania to explore a new area my old friend and PH had just acquired. And then the possibility of busting a buffalo came up. For 18 months the only thing I had figured out was to shoot with various green lasers. But this was extremely limited in daylight conditions, almost could forget daylight capability. Just so happened my Myrtle 500 MDM had a rail forward of the receiver. Two weeks before leaving, I already had a laser sighted in at 25 yds for it, I had this Holosun Green Circle Dot, and I thought what would happen if I mounted the Holosun up front? I knew I could not see it with the right eye, but tilted it slightly left and magic, I could see perfectly with the left eye! And it all came from that.

I only shot at 25 yds..... I really was not left with enough time to do a serious study with the system, but I figured I would be pretty good at 25 and maybe out to 40 or so if required. As it happens, it is moot as buffalo just was not in the cards on this trip anyway. Due to lots of factors.

The Laser at 25....

And the Holosun at 25.......

I have now learned I can mount the system more to the rear, and discovered the EGW full rails for the M70s which is what I am using now on the bolt guns I want to set up and shoot.......

Because of the increasing difficulty of getting projectiles from other countries into Australia, Fordy and I discussed using local manufacturers to do what we want with light-for-calibre bullets for the JCE. We are fortunate to have Cameron Stachan, the manufacturer of Atomic29 Bullets, in Australia and we will be catching up in a few weeks.
On Saturday I'm flying to NZ to hunt with my son for 2 weeks and I took my Blaser fitted with 270WSM barrel and Swaro Z6 1.7-10 scope to the range a few weeks back to check zero with 150gr factory Winchester Powerpoints for this trip. They're spot-on at 200m and shoot about 1.2 MOA - good enough. At the end of the day I fired 3 rounds that I had handloaded with 130gr Atomic29 bullets at the 300m target. I rang Cameron and ordered more. When I walked out to the target I found a 17mm (0.67") group! It's a shame that I have no opportunity to load these for NZ as I am in the middle of shifting house and all of my gear is in boxes ...... somewhere.

I findly had the battery go dead on a Vortex Spitfire last week. Can't even remember how old the sight is. I know I've used it a lot over the years, maybe 3 years old might be more. One great thing is the sight could still be used with its black crosshair. New battery wrote the date on it and will see how long it lasts.

@michael458 I’m curious to read your thoughts on a similar short DG cartridge - the 450 Vincent short, developed by my long time friend, Roy Vincent. It has a COAL of 3.38” and with a 500 grain bullet and 89 grains of RL-15 it gives 2,440 fps, and I suspect closer to 2,500 with a Cutting Edge or Northfork.

It’s what Alan Vincent was carrying on my buffalo hunt with him last year. I don’t recall what bullet he was shooting but recall him saying he was getting almost 2,500 with 500 grain bullets. He shot 3 elephant bulls in the 6-8 weeks before I arrived and really liked its performance. I found that interesting as his Tanzania backup rifle is a 450 Ackley, which gets similar velocities with the same bullet, but in a long cartridge length of 3.80” and less efficient as it requires 92 grains of RL15 to get the same velocity.

Your thoughts?
