Good morning, I am looking for a cost effective ammo belt holder to use on our Safari next year. There are 4 of us going, my dad, 2 of my sons, and I. I would like to buy one for everyone in our group, so looking for something cost effective, but not cheaply made. I ordered some from eBay that looked good but are too small for cartridges. We are taking 300WM to 458 Lott with us. Any good recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

I bought a few from Trader Keith at the SCI this year. They are $40 dollars on his web site. They are not leather but made of the same material his culling belt is made of.

Here are some well made cartridge holders that I have used that will work. These are listed for 375 H&H but work just fine for my 300 Win Mag and 458 Lott too.

Trader Keith Cartridge Slide made from heavy duty cotton webbing really well made and heavy duty. $40. I used on our last trip for elephant & buff, worked great supplemented with my leather cartridge belt. Holds 6 rounds.

I got this from eBay from African Game Industries, Inc Cape Buffalo Hide Rifle 10 Cartridge Ammo Slide. 375/458. Works fine with my 300 win mag, 375 H&H, and 458 Lott. Quality seems very good although I haven’t used in the field. $38

All photos are 375 H&H rounds.

511 Tactical Belt Ranger Green I got off of eBay for $12. These work perfect are high quality and inexpensive.

If I were outfitting my dad and two sons for that trip tomorrow, I'd probably go with the Crooked Horn belts for the classic look and proven performance, or the Duluth elastic loop setup if I wanted to save a few bucks and have more flexibility. Either one will serve you well. The surplus 40mm belt is the budget king if you don't mind the look.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying them, but they’re not terribly difficult to make yourself with a minimal assortment of tools. Kind of adds to their value if that’s your thing.

I haven’t had (or made) anything for larger than 303/308, but it was an enjoyable process and they work well. The above mentioned makers seem to be great options as well. It kinda comes down to personal preference on finish, from what I can tell.

A budget alternative is African Game Industries

Since @Spartan5 just mentioned cost effective ammunition holders for 4 people I just threw in an additional belt too. It really depends on how much he wants to spend. I’m certain there are old threads on this subject too.

I like custom leather cartridge belts with sewn in elastic loops for DG that range from $200-$400 like many here on AH but it’s for damn sure not absolutely necessary for plains game or even DG. There are lots of lower cost options that will do just as good a job.

Some of the custom leather cartridge holders previously mentioned are really nice too. They will be $100 or more and a good quality custom leather belt that could be worn through the belt loops or over your regular belt will be $200 or more.

I’m not sure if everyone in his 4 man hunting group are all after DG or just plains game? A 5rd or 10 rd Cape buffalo hide cartridge holder from African Game Industries, $38-40, should be fine either way or a Trader Keith Cotton Web 6 rd holder for $40 and if you combine that with 511 Tactical 1.5 inch belts you can find on eBay for around $20 that’s a total of about $60-65 per person. These will work just a good as the more expensive custom leather options.

I bought this setup a couple years ago (see below) for buffalo and plains game: used but like new 511 Tactical belt, ranger green and Triple K 45-70 cartridge holder on eBay for a total of $38. I had to soak the cartridge loops in water on the leather Triple K cartridge holder to stretch out and accommodate 416 Rigby rounds, after it dried, it fit perfectly. Honestly this setup performs just as well as the more expensive custom leather cartridge belt and a culling belt that I got since then.

+1 for Murray Leather. They are priced very fairly for the quality. And lots of options according to your preference of style.

+1 on the Trader Keith canvas belt slid. They are great I have one for my 375 H&H and one for my 416 Rigby. Just make sure your belt is 1-1/2" wide or thinner, they will not work with a wider belt.

Just to sidetrack a bit... for those who have used culling belts and cartridge slides... What are your thoughts on butt stock cartridge holders? They never seem to be recommended, but would seem faster access.

Thanks to all of you for the great suggestions and especially for sharing links to things, that makes it so much easier! I wish I were handy with leather making, I think it would be very cool to make them but I do not have that gift. I appreciate a of you for once again the wealth of knowledge and options you share. This is a truly great community to be a part of.

I like reaching out to local leatherworkers/hobbyists and comissioning stuff. Supports their art which I like and I get something really well made at a price not aimed at people whose bank balance gets printed in landscape format

Belt slide below £50
Pouch £40

Jerome, do you think my last post in rough camping must maybe shift as an article?

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl
