I finally did it. I joined the 404 Jeffery club! Special thanks to @Angelo_orygun for parting, albeit somewhat reluctantly, with this wonderful rifle and all the components. I don't think you will find anyone on the forum that packs a gun so well as this was! And a thanks to @RR 314 for remembering who it was that had this.
There is a fun story behind this rifle as it relates to me. In 2021 or 2022 I was on a ship in the middle of the ocean, for work, casually searching for a 404 Jeff to pine over. I certainly found several, most beyond my financial reckoning, but this beauty from AHR popped up in my Google image search.
I followed the link to a GunsInternational listing that was of course, expired. SOLD. This took some of the wind out of my sails, but what I saw is almost exactly what I wanted and would kill several birds with one stone. 1. A CZ Safari Magnum. 2. A 404 Jeffery. 3. An AHR rifle. 4. Came with a quarter rib with express sights, barrel band front sights, barrel band sling swivel, a fantastic lumber.
I knew the listing was SOLD and I knew the chances of this gun popping up for sale on there, or anywhere else, was slimmer than dollar bill. Yet, due to some dogged determination when I am fixated on something, I searched the listings every single day since to no avail. Finally, 19 days ago, I posted a WTB listing on this AH. At that point I was willing to take a factory CZ Magnum and would work out the issues and upgrades later. Some fine AH folks sent me private messages with offers, but they were not quite what I was looking for. At least that is what I convinced myself of. Though they did not work out, I am grateful to those members for sending them!
My hope began to ebb away until @RR 314 posted:
"Oh, the pain, blues and agony of your link.
. I have a couple guns that still bring me angst. That is one of them! A member here bought it when I agreed to buy it from the original owner. NOT his fault at all. Owner said he was going to send it to have it checked out for feeding after I agreed to buy and then I saw it listed for sale from the guy that did the work (on consignment). I looked for an AHR in .404 for years and finally had one within grasp of my greasy little mitts.
Ok. Therapy session over. I feel better. Good luck with the search! The .404 virus is more contagious than the omnicron variant.
" "As referenced, a guy on here from North Texas ended up with it. My CTE is kicking and I cannot remember his handle. Nice guy that I exchanged messages with when he acquired the rifle. Still gives me angina.
. Always will.
""@Angelo_orygun was the fortunate buyer of the rifle you referenced. I had a lucid interval and it came to me! If he doesn't see this, shoot him a message and see if he still has it. I recall he said he MAY be willing to move it on down the line."
I went back and found @Angelo_orygun's previous posts, both on his successful safari with said rifle, and to one where he mentioned that he might be willing to part with it. I left a comment and received a DM. After good phone call, where we deviated around the world of guns and hunting, it was decided. A deal was made. And after 5 years of hunting and waiting, the Rifle was mine.
I brought this gem home today, after significant excavation from the packaging (packed with extreme care, every part individually wrapped in pool noodles and bubble wrap, at the gun shop, and the ammo and components were on the porch waiting for me.
Now the challenge will be getting to the range!
