Suppressors prohibited for temporary import into South Africa?

Suppressors aren't banned in RSA. Every PH uses them and the cans are also sold over the counter there for ~$100+ish

The question isn't about RSA regs but US state dept ITAR regs and what happens when re-entering the US with a US owned suppressor. Like so many subjects, it depends a bit on which agent you are working with but that shouldn't matter at all.

you know it seems like every year someone posts about a Customs agent being a real jerk in Atlanta, seems he might be an anti gun/hunter.

I don't know if I would say all of them or even if the majority use them.

In both my hunts and seeing a dozen different PH's only one had a suppressor for a rifle, a 270 Winchester. And he did a lot of cull hunting where they are very effective.

In 2023 I brought my own suppressor with me to RSA. I did add it to my 4457 and kept a copy of my tax stamp with me. I experienced zero issues outbound from OKC, while in country, or upon my return to ATL. I was not required to fill out any other applications or permits. Not really sure what to make of this new information. Curious to see how it plays out.

went to the airport to see my Customs agent and see if my suppressor would be put on my 4457. He put it on the form and told me he always does that but earlier in the day had a conference call for so big wig in Omaha that the Customs dept do not want them put on.

What city CBP office were you in?

I have a customs appointment today at 2 pm. I have 2 4457's. One with my suppressor and one without. I'll report back on what they say. The agent I'm meeting with was very nice and accommodating when I made the appointment.

Just got back from my appointment with CBP. The agent was professional, knew a lot about guns and was very helpful. I got the form signed with the suppressor included. The agent told me he always lists them on the 4457. When I told him there was conflicting info online about suppressors he offered to sign both forms but assured me the suppressor needs to be listed.

Same experience as @dhoover mentioned above, I didn’t have issue adding the suppressors on my 4457, in fact the agent asked me if I wanted to add them too, which I gladly accepted.

Added my suppressor on a 4457 last week at Fort Wayne, Indiana Airport no problem at all.

You could almost buy a suppressor in a gas station last time I was in SA. lol It was very different from US.

Yes you can buy a suppressor in SA. You would need to sight in your rifle..... more than the zero check as it will likely not shoot the same and could be several inches off. So bring extra ammo if doing so

Hope there isn’t an issue coming back through Atlanta. Don’t see how it would because I’ll be in country already and it’s not illegal in Georgia.

what other airports with a custom office are close to you? Maybe check here to see if others can help you with specific place. Hell I’d try another day even at Atlanta maybe it’s just one dude. I’d also complain to the head office

Several… I travel almost weekly so will travel elsewhere to another office. Just their unwillingness to do any other serialized items on a 4457 and saying “the form is actually a firearms license” means I will go elsewhere to make sure I get serialized valuables listed.

They are incorrect. I do my high end optics as well on those forms.

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl

Hey Steve, This is Steve Washington we met at KMG last year. I am interested in your Winchester. Would love to speak with you about it. I work third shift and I cannot take a phone with me to work. Let me know a good time to call during one of your mornings. My phone is [redacted]. Live in Florida so I have to account for the time difference.
Look forward to hearing from you.
