One of my pronghorn guides and a hunting buddy of mine, Jim, is a world class fisherman. He travels the world to catch giant fish. He holds several world records in different line classes. He’s currently fishing the Rio Caterina in Los Glaciares National Park near Estancia Cristina in Argentina for giant King salmon. He caught nine fish today with a fly rod with the biggest being this 54 pound King. Crazy!
 
Scott, I’d like to talk to him after he gets back. I’m working with a couple PH buddies who are developing some new opportunities for Tigerfish that exceed anything I’ve ever heard of anywhere in all of Africa. I’m working on organizing a group trip for 2027. Tigers up to 25+ pounds and lots of them.

Great fishing, but the photo looks fake as get out.

No offense intended, but it looks all wrong.
 
What? Really? Here’s another. Perhaps you should do a Google search on this special fishing spot for King Salmon before posting?!

I can clearly see the difference in shadow where his hands are holding it up under the belly of the fish. The weight of the animal is sinking it down as the angler is gripping it for the shot.

Remarkably clear photography with good equipment seems to always get scrutinized harder than phone shots because of the clarity of first class photography from actual cameras.
 
For anyone with experience, is there any difference in the taste of one of these monster Kings vs a more normal sized one from the same location?
 
@Scott CWO , your buddy caught a monster, so congrats to him. Thanks for sharing, and now more of us are aware of another reason to visit Argentina.

BeeMaa, yes there is a difference. Time of year is the primary factor. Then age. It’s fall down there. Hence the dark color. Fresh into the river or bright fish are better to eat. Early spring and summer is best eating. The dark male will eventually die and would be good smoked, but mushy and strong tasting to eat as a fillet.
 
Congrats! I was trout fishing down in Argentina in January and the guides were showing me pics of fish like the one your friend has -50 pound class kings.
Evidently there is a positive for Chilean fish farming as these giant King strains have escaped from where there’re raised in Chile and have come around the Cape into Argentina. It’s a whole new fishery. Guide had videos of clients catching monsters on the fly! He wanted me to book a hosted trip. I told him they were too big for my 8 weights!!!
Makes my 29” brown look puny!!!!

The King pictured above looks to be wild born. Even Chilean fisheries remove the adipose fin before release.
 
Had no clue that there are any king salmon in Argentina, great fish!

@matt vejar , you answered my next question, where did they come from and become established?
 
Those are great fish. From my recollection both, Chile and Argentina have large kings that were transplanted in the 60’s from the Cowlitz and the Sac.The runs have flourished and have because a widely known “secret” fishery (I know that’s an oxymoron).
I believe the same program is going on in NZ as well.
The fish can be caught in the ocean as well as up in the rivers.
I wouldn’t be offended if a fact check rebuttal was presented but I do think the locations and timing is correct.
