My advice is: KISS….Keep it simple stupid. I went through the very same situation you are in. I went to a number of exhibitors and narrowed it down to 2. One in Namibia and the other in South Africa. I spent quite a bit of time questioning both and ultimately went with Blaauwkrantz in South Africa. 110,000 privately owned acres, 40+ huntable species, 5 experienced PH’s, wonderful accommodations and a very warm and welcoming family. If you want another to consider, Bayly Sippel. They listened to what I wanted and absolutely checked every box I had for an African Safari. The PH they assigned was perfect. It was, honestly, like they had done a complete psychological work-up on me and perfectly matched me with everything for 8 days. I can't say enough good about the experience.
 
The shows are really nice after you’ve done a few safaris and know what you are looking for. Before that, I think they just offer too many options. For a first safari, I think you’d be better off just messaging sponsors here and talking with references on phone. Most hunters will tell you more about their safari than you want to hear. You’ll get a good idea if that outfitter is a good fit for you or not based on their clients. I’d pick a region and start narrowing down outfitters. I like the hunting style in eastern cape. Much more glassing and walking than other areas.

I tried leopard in Zimbabwe this year and I’ll never do it again. It is not even as much fun as tree stand hunting whitetail. We drove around the first three days shooting a few bait animals of which I didn’t get to shoot but others with the outfitter did. No objection in that. For the next three days we drove around looking for leopard sign, hanging cameras, and then driving around for the following week checking cameras and setting in blinds morning and night hoping a mature male would come to bait. I convinced myself to do it the whole two weeks but I’ll never do it again. Spent a lot of money to never pull the trigger.

I do like Africa and plains game is plentiful. I had an archery safari in S Africa that was great. 8 animals in 14 days. About half spot and stalk. I also had a trip to Namibia and hunted at the Sney River Lodge, a Blaser camp. WOW! What a fabulous place. The lodge and services were better than any 5 star hotel in the U.S. lots of game on a 100,000 acre facility. It is a high fence but only surrounding a 100k acres. Not more pricy than anywhere else at the time.

Good luck and maybe everyone needs to do the leopard hunt for themselves. I know I’ll never hunt a cat again.

dang I’m sorry you didn’t get your cat, maybe that hunt would be best with other animals. Help with baits then go do some other hunting and keep checking baits until things come together. We were thinking of SA or Namibia and have settled on SA for this trip. That is at least one decision made. We both want a quality kudu and I am quiet fond of those little bushbucks and nyala either way kudu is the focus.
 
The Kudu is awesome. On my archery safari in S Africa I managed a Kudu, an Impala bot black and standard, a Blesbuck and one you should look at is the Nyala. In my opinion the most beautiful animal in Africa. My personal best on that trip was a stalked Cape Buffalo I was able to. Take at 21 yards. Very exciting.

You will become addicted to Africa as it isn’t really more expensive than a guided elk hunt in New Mexico. And you get to hunt every day and choose which animal you want. You’ll love it.
 
I must admit I;m pretty excited, I have wanted to hunt a kudu sense I was a kid. That was a long time ago.This could be my only trip to Africa but hopefully not.
 
It’s addictive. I’m glad you’re going. I think you’ve picked your outfitter already. There are so many good ones but be sure and check references.

I hunted 15 days for leopard and did not even get to sit a bait for just leopard. It happens no fault of the ph or outfitter that’s just leopard hunting which is why I have saved him for last of my big 5

Cheaper to combine leopard with plains game because you will have to shoot plains game for bait on the leopard hunt anyway.

Go to the Niassa Reserve in northern Mozambique. Lots of species to hunt there and probably get your leopard in a few days. Got mine on 3rd or 4th day and first afternoon in the blind after several leopards hit my baits. I got it as a cancellation from a guy who had killed four leopards there with a bow in the daylight in four trips! I got mine in the daylight at 4pm. For Africa this sight is pretty good. Just place a general queery that might say “has anyone hunted this area with x outfitter? Please give me honest feedback”
