CANADA: Polar Bear Hunt Nunavut Canada

What an amazing experience! Congratulations! Did you have an outfitter?
Thanks for your question! You know as a guide and Outfitter myself and an exhibitor at the Hunting shows; I know the heavy hitters involved in Booking American hunters for Polar Bear Hunts. I can tell you whether it’s Shane Black, Dan Fredricks or Gary Adams that they do a wonderful job! They’re super professional. They have great equipment and will take excellent care of you on your hunt! In my opinion you wont be sorry if you booked with any of them! I’m always looking for a little bit of a more adventurous experience, and on this hunt I chose to go in a little different direction. Now mind you when you say, “did you use an outfitter”? Yes, I did!
I’m not saying I understand everything about this, but it is my understanding that every one of the Inuit that has the tags for Polar Bear Hunting they have to be a licensed Outfitter themselves. It is my understanding that when you’re booking through one of the well-known “outfitting companies” in the U.S. that what you’re really doing is you’re trusting him and he goes out and he’s basically subcontracting the Inuit Outfitter that must be licensed himself in Canada and he typically has two polar bears to hunt per year!
So yes, I went with an Outfitter; I just didn’t go through one of the well-known American Companies. Trust me; they are awesome and there’s nothing wrong with them! In fact it’s the safest than most assured way of booking a trip that will go well and give you the result you want! I just like a little extra adventure “and risk” and I have to be more budget minded than many with deep pockets! Ha!

Shane Black is a great guy. And your comment about having a positive attitude is such good advice, particularly for the arctic. I stay on with my guide after a hunt there and what I learned about the people and their lives was life changing. You really did have a great adventure. Congratulations again

Looks like a great experience, congratulations.
Curious to hear about the Walrus hunting.

When you go on one of these times, you have your choice of harpooning the walrus and open water or shooting one on the rocks. You end up collecting a lot of biological samples of blood and tissue. You get the understanding that this is a resource that Inuit have used forever and you’re just being allowed to act in their state and harvest the animal, and then they will utilize the meat. I selected one that had very atypical tusks on purpose. I looked over hundreds and hundreds of them and picked out the hot looking tusk configuration I could find. Typically, they display outward and are wider at the base then at the top and of course mine is just the opposite. The other walrus can become quite grumpy and you have to haze them out of the way to get to the one that you shot using a long pole! It’s actually pretty wild!

Thank you, Bob! Actually, I have to wait three hours in line to get into the expo today in Salt Lake to set up my booth…. I decided what better time to try to post something! You are so amazing if you were doing this, it would be still organized so grammatically correct and so perfectly punctuated! Ha! I just wish I could tell all these interested AH members the story in person because you know how animated and what a great storyteller I am! I could literally enrapture them if I could just somehow tell him the story in person! Oh well, thanks for the kind words Bob and thanks for being such a great friend. You were there at the very beginning and I never would’ve gone on my first African hunt if it hadn’t been for you telling me that the Tanzania destination that I’ve chosen you thought was going to turn out well for me! Isn’t it awesome that this site can make lifelong friends it sure has with you and I! Take care, Bob!

You are too kind.

AH is pretty neat. Fifteen years ago I would never have imagine I would be in regular contact by WhatsApp or text with someone I met on the internet. Now hardly a day goes by without a WhatsApp from someone I met on AH. Thanks Jerome.

You are doing a great job telling your story, and what a story it is. Keep it up. You are doing great!

What a neat hunt!

Congratulations, it looks like it was a really stellar adventure. That polar bear is about the best one I’ve seen in quite a few years. And I guess you’re about the least cold polar bear hunter in history!

Thank you for sharing your hunt @Jerycmeach ....really enjoyed your story.
Certainly a bucket-list hunt .....and a magnificent polar bear.
Regards

Unreal. Thank you so much for posting. This is my dream hunt and you have inspired me to work harder to make it happen.

I could listen to your stories and advice for hours. Thank you again.

Thanks for the detailed response.
Always good to see the whole animal being utilised.

A very interesting hunt & adventure.
By chance did you record the "squared measurements" of the bear?
With green hide before salting, laid out flat, tip of front paw to tip of opposite front paw, and tip of nose to tip of tail? And skull measurements?

It would be interesting to know how modern day hunted bears compare to the bruins hunted back when a lot more were hunted every year.

Thanks for your report and photos. We don't get to hear enough about the far North on AH. I miss living in Alaska and getting to coastal villages where you could see polar bears. It was always interesting around whaling season. The carcasses would be taken to the dump and the bears would climb around on them. I remember going into one village (Katovik) and the locals said if you see a big white dog under the house, don't pet it! The bears were common there.

wow Jery , awesome, so I hope to see you in SALT LAKE Fri. what is your booth number or name. looking foward to it.

Thank you so much for the kind words! You know I find out that these hunters are what you make of them! I know two other gentlemen that went on this hunt and they didn’t have a good hunt at all! When I got there, I could tell that I needed to take charge and point the ship in the right direction! Being that I’m a Boat, captain myself and a guy in an Outfitter and a passionate an outdoorsman I could see the writing on the wall and it wasn’t gonna end pretty if I didn’t do something. Show with a positive attitude and a smile I coerced and guided the ship if you will no pun intended and man that I have a tremendous Hunt! Then when I got my Bear and they said well now you can change your plane and go home. I said no way I’m staying here and we’re gonna do all the things that you do is fall as subsistence hunting and fishing and camping and so forth and Man did I have a great time! I think there’s a lesson there if you go into a Hunt with a positive attitude and treat the people well. Tell them about your dreams and your desires and many times they’ll rise to the occasion if you know what I mean! On the other hand if you go into a Hunt telling them that the equipment is no good. The food is no good. The hotels too expensive yada yada yada often times the guide our outfitter will just shut down on you early. Figuring you can’t be pleased! I’ve been on both sides of this as the guy and the client and so it’s kinda easy for me to see how to make the best of these hunts.

Oh yeah, thanks for noticing the broken jaw! Yes, what story there is to tell! We saw two big mature male bears on a carcass of a beluga whale on the beach from out in the boat about a half mile offshore..
We made the stock from about a mile away after landing the boat and when we came up over the sand dune or gravel dune, we were right on top of the bears! They were in a horrible fight, bear hugging each other and rolling, and they ended up in the water, and the one grabbed the other one by the jaw and broke part of his jaw is tooth out right wall I was looking through the scope…
You’re right I need to flush this story out and tell it boy it’s kind of long, but I’ll just use this as a teaser. If you don’t mind, it was an amazing adventure.
No, they aren’t in portable at this time, but with Trump in office, we hope that they will be become portable… back in July. I believe it was there were some committee meetings in Washington DC about what changes could possibly be made to the endangered species act…. Right now under the current marine mammals act which I think was around 1972 or 73 they’re not importable.
I have hopes that that will change! I’ve spoken to Craig Boddington and Larry Wieshune and others about this and basically what they say is we have the best chance we’ve ever had with the current administration to get something done. We’ll just have to see.
Man Jery if you could've filmed that bear fight !! Look forward to meet you in Salt Lake. Ill be in the cowboy hat .LOL. Along with 100 other guys.

Be careful of hunting Chewore South, the area has been decimated.....

Curious about this. I hunted Chewore South with D&Y in September and they did tell me it was there last hunt there.

Which outfits shot it out?
Impala cull hunt for camp meat!
