For me - pretty much anything but Barnes - had some very poor and inconsistent performance from some of their bullets - and I've got a memory like an old Jumbo, just hard to go back. In my opinion, there are monometal bullets out there from other manufactures that are every bit as good or even better than what Barnes has to offer - some of these bullets just haven't got the use or exposure yet.
Ha acceptable accuracy with Barnes in an inline muzzleloader, centerfire not so much.

But if I had to choose one manufacturer it would be Nosler because of the whole lineup. Ballistic tip. accubond, partition. With those three they cover a very wide spectrum.

Either I've been very lucky, or my Ruger No. 1A in 6.5x55 SE shooting 140gr Partitions is pretty spectacular at dropping deer. Zero tracking required so far. (y)

My CVA Accura loves the Barnes 50 T-Ez's and all my rifles shoot the TTSX better than I can.

When I started reloading I used Sierra with pretty much everything. I was only 18, and they were the same price for a 100 as the noslers were for 50. I shot a LOT back then. The sierras worked on everything I hit with them. Whitetail mainly, a couple elk, 1 small bison, turkeys, g-hogs and any other varmint I could find. They never failed. Sometimes I wouldn’t get an exit, but I always had a short track job. For whatever reason, I have switched to more expensive bullets for whatever reason, and as I wondered about the question that started this, I realized maybe I should give them a go again. I have thousands more of them. The last ones I shot were just a couple years ago, 6.5 130 grain tipped gamechangers, and they worked perfectly fine. But I keep buying accubonds, swifts, bonded this or that. One bullet I hate using on game, and I probably will never use again hunting is Berger hunting bullets. I have also not used a lot of Barnes, but have several boxes to try.
Accubonds
Ballistic tips
Long range accubonds ( limited for me to long range field work on deer mainly).
A frames
Scirocco I have for a couple guns, but yet to use on game
Lapua mega expand well, but I have had several come apart from jackets
Norma oryx I like a lot
Partitions I have started using the last couple of years and I am starting to love them!! I love they open up and damage, and still keep on trucking!!!

As a non reloader I’ve really gravitated towards Barnes.

-The 80 grain TTSX load shoots lights out in my old Sako 243. Kills Texas whitetail dead. It produced a sub moa 5 shot group. I never knew I could shoot that well :ROFLMAO:

- My Ruger #1 shoots the factory 168 TTSX better than anything else and that was my go to load on two plains games safaris. Full confidence with it.

And every Trophy aoudad hunt I’ve been on I borrowed a 300 win mag with 180 TTSX or 7mag with 140 TTSX.

I’ve hunted with Nosler Accubonds and they just seem soft to me. They pancake on whitetail out of a few deer rifles I have tried them in. Performance was deadly but just noticed them to be soft. I like Partitions and how the rear shank keeps going even when front over expands. Just hard to find factory loads and not as accurate as Barnes in my two favorite hunting rifles.

So for now I really love the Barnes. Easy to get in a pinch and generally accurate. Just have to try all the weights in calibre offerings for your rifle.

The most accurate bullets I've ever fired were Sierra Matchkings, from my most accurate rifle.

However, I don't think they preform well as hunting bullets.

Nosler Partitions have never failed me.

I hunt with several older rifles with low twists rates, and they don't do a good job of stabilizing monolithic copper bullets.

I think Barnes makes great bullets, but, IME, they have difficulty stabilizing in older rifles.

Just ME...

I voted primarily with Africa in mind, and that was for the North Fork. Swift A-Frames are a close second because I prefer the design ever so slightly of the North Fork SS, but primarily because I've not had a rifle that I couldn't develop an accurate load for and that quite quickly. I can't say the same about the A-Frames, some of my rifles just don't like them accuracy wise compared to the NF softs.

If I were not hunting DG and just about anywhere else in the world, I would not hesitate to return to Nosler. Ballistic tips for small stuff, Partitions for medium to larger animals. I've not used the Accubond, but it seems like a good blend of the Ballistic Tips and the Partition.

Barnes TTSX. Not perfect performance from absolutely every shot but had very few disappointments. They hit hard, shock hard and penetrate far and straight, even through bone. They will be my preference until something else proves better.

No Remington Core Lokts ? I feel so antiquated…
Don’t worry I’m still using the good old 180gr core lokts in my grandfathers .30-06 I inherited. Probably the only type of ammo that thing has ever shot. I think I even have an “antiquated” box of the round nose 220gr core lokts for that gun as well.

Plenty of whitetails and even my first elk have ended up in the freezer thanks to core lokts.

The game animals below (shot with my 7x57mm Mauser) were taken with the old Winchester Super- X 175Gr soft point (last produced in 1988). Today, I use the Sellier & Bellot 173Gr SPCE soft point.

My other three choices would have to be:

Winchester Super- X Power Point (particularly for the .243 Winchester and the .270 Winchester)
Nosler AccuBond (particularly their 250Gr factory load for the .338 Winchester Magnum)
Norma Oryx (particularly their 286Gr factory load for the 9.3x62mm Mauser).
Those bullets have probably accounted for more game in the freezer than most want to admit.

Growing up, all the calibers, bullet weights and brands you mentioned in your post were all anyone used. East of the Mississippi river, the grand old 30-30 with the Remington 170 grain bullets probably killed more Deer than most others combined.

I'm old enough to remember sale flyers in the Sunday newspaper from Woolworths, Gold Circle in early September for Remington and Winchester ammo for $6 or $7 per box, and Remington Mohawk 22LR for 59 cents.

My wife and I went on our first Bucket List Safari in Namibia last August. I harvested 5 animals in 5 days with 5 shots. I was using a Remington 700 RMEF Custom Rifle firing 300 Remington Ultra Magnum cartridges loaded with Barnes 180 grain TTSX bullets running at just under 3,200 fps. Eland at 100 meters, Sable at 300 meters, Gemsbok at 220, Waterbuck at 100 meters, and Kudu at 100 meters. Barnes gets my vote.

My 338-378 weatherby loves Nosler partitions 250 gr shoots down to .25 at 100 yards under an inch at 300 yards .It spays like a shotgun with any hornady bullets so does my Ruger 77 338 win mag .

Yes, it may seem unglamorous, but I have never had a problem with a Corlokt bullet

I have Barnes TSX loaded for my 9.3x74r & my 375 H&H. But based on the hunting I'm currently doing, these are not options that I've been choosing to take with me. In reading field reports, I often see enthusiastic recommendations like yours for Barnes. One of the reasons for doing this poll was to see if that enthusiasm would be represented in the quantity of votes or if it was just that Barnes had a small group of users who were more vocal in their support. Barnes was leading from the beginning, but at this early stage in the voting (42 voters), Swift is now leading by a single vote. Barnes support is still very strong.

While typing this reply, @Nosler guy's anti-Barnes reply popped up giving an example of a contrarian view to a popular choice.
I tried Barnes but had 2 pencil in and out holes and lost one hog. That was bad enough but then my accuracy started opening groups and I found copper fouling in the bore. It was a major pain to get out. Like Odonata, I have a long memory and have not gone back to them. That led me to the Norma Oryx bullets and I have found them very good for most anything. I have been using the Sellier & Bellot in my 7x57 and 8x57 with the SPCE bullets which I also like. I do still use Nosler Partitions as I loaded a bunch of them several years ago. As far as great penetration, I get that by loading heavy for caliber bullets.

When I first started handloading 20 years ago, my first project was to work up loads with different bullets for my Ruger 338 WM. Accubond won those tests. It has been my go to hunting bullet for all calibers since. My son took his first whitetail buck this past November with his Ruger 6.5x55 with 140 grain accubonds assembled by dad.

I've enjoyed hunting for years but in all of that time I've spent in the woods, my hunting has actually been pretty limited: Mostly it's been southeastern whitetail deer & hogs at moderate ranges. Because of this, a wide range of projectiles work pretty well for my hunting simply because I'm not putting excessive demands or expectations on my bullets. In the last few years, most of the deer I've put in the freezer arrived there via 140~150gr Hornady Interlocks and Nosler Partitions at less than 200 meters. But over the last five years, I've had various rifles setup to shoot bullets from eleven different manufacturers. Recently, I've been hunting with Nosler, Hornady, Norma, RWS & Woodleigh depending on the rifle & caliber.

After years of lurking on the periphery reading about other hunter's trips to Africa, I joined this site 15 months ago mainly because I had some questions I wanted to ask & this group seemed to have a lot of experience & opinions worth evaluating. One of the goals I've set for myself is to focus less on the hunting I'm doing now & think more about the hunting I hope to do in the future. I decided to do a poll just to see (hopefully somewhat definitively) what the favorite bullet manufacturers were that work well on African plains game (which includes many species larger than my current hunting encounters). I excluded dangerous game from this question because that topic seemed to be better addressed as a separate poll maybe focused on specific bullets or solids instead of manufacturers. I sent Jerome a request to expand the poll choices & he was kind enough to double it to 20. I based the poll mainly on the bullets I could find available on American & European reloading sites.

Assuming that most people are like me and might shoot different bullets for various caliber & bullet weight combinations, I gave everyone five choices since "Plains Game" is a pretty wide topic. Any information you would like to share about specific bullet model, caliber & game taken would of course be appreciated. While some shooters may have a wide variety of ammo at home (like me), it is my guess that this gets narrowed down to a smaller selection of favorites when you actually go on a hunting trip. I hope that this poll reflects what that preferred choice usually is.

I have been a fan of Nosler AccuBonds almost since they came in the US I shoot 140 grains in a 7-08 and 7 Rem Mag for blacktails and mule deer. I've taken mule deer, black bear, moose, and various African plains game with 200 grain ABs out of my .300 Win Mag. Accurate and hold up to impact.
