Suppressor, to cover or not to cover

Well like a lot of people I purchased a suppressor after Jan. 1 to save the $200 tax. I now wait for it to go through the ATF to notify me I can pick it up from the dealer. So my question is...do I put a cover on it or not? The setup will be used for deer hunting if that matters on how one may answer. The suppressor is not colored it's a dull silver.
 
I dont cover..

But I’m not trying to camouflage the suppressor… and I’m not rapid firing.. so I’m not worried about burning a hand while handling it…
 
Unless you are emptying an AR at hostiles, I would not worry about it on a hunting rifle.
 
Slightly different opinion--if you are hunting from blinds or elevated positions, I use a cover for reducing noises bumping the blind or shooting sticks... but for the traditional need for a cover, I don't have one!
 
You don't necessarily need a cover hunting. The can won't get hot enough. Don't worry about scratches....it's metal.
 
Tina and I both have the Banish 30. I like the cover, she doesn't. As others have already posted, if you aren't using it on an AR, and you aren't using a thermal, it's optional. If you are running a thermal and plan on dumping entire mags on a sounder of hogs, I'd say it's mandatory.
 
While we're at it. Another question, sorry suppressor is new to me. I'll ask the dealer when I pick it up too. I looked at and handled the suppressor and it looked to direct thread with a hex base which I assume is tightening.
Do I thread it directly onto the barrel (barrel is already factory threaded) or do I need muzzle device/mount to put the surpressor on.
I should've asked the dealer when I was there but they were super busy with people waiting in line to do their registration. I wanted to respect the people behind me and get on my way since I knew when I pick up I can get all the details.
 
A couple addl thoughts - the cover is key at the range or when taking multiple shots to avoid mirage as mentioned earlier. Cover is quieter, and with the added length it helps to reduce the sound of bumping the wall in a blind.

On low power scope settings, the suppressor becomes more noticeable given the larger radius, so that’s a bit of a con.
 
Never used a cover been using suppressors for 20 years
 
Direct thread avoids added length for a bolt action rifle, if a pistol you’ll need a Nielsen device (spring).

For semi-auto, whatever floats your boat. Direct thread isn’t bad, but a QD attachment is great too.
 
Covers can add a slight amount of weight and change the barrel harmonics and thus POI change. I use one on a prairie dog rig and at the range on a rifle I shoot several rounds through at the range as with a 35 power scope at 1000 yard range the mirage from the can is drastic even after just a few rounds. Hunting big game it's not necessary but really doesn't hurt anything either as long as the cover is tight and of proper manufacture as to not slide or blow off.
 
I have one but I don’t use it. I only use it on my hunting rifle and it adds just enough diameter to be a distraction in my scope when on low power

You don’t need one for hunting but if you use at the range, check the placement every so often or you can blow it off the end onto the range…causing some interesting looks…trust me.

The suppressor itself also. When I worked as an RSO at an indoor range and gun store, I probably had to call a cease fire at least once a week so I could go downrange to retrieve their new toy.

There are ups and downs of both direct thread and quick fit suppressor mounts, but I can never remember having to go downrange to get a shooters new direct thread suppressor.
 
Direct thread is my preference for sure.
 
I’ve got both… on a hunting gun direct thread is the best option IMO..

Not to mention most QD mounts look really stupid hanging off the end of a bolt gun….
