True Story:

Many years ago a farmer in Ohio gave a city fellow permission to deer hunt his farm. Afterwards the farmer had second thoughts but was still going to allow this fellow to deer hunt on his property. As a precaution the farmer in big latter's white washed his cow and mule.

Opening day of deer season the city fellow shot the farmer's cow claiming the cow was a deer. The farmer finally convinced the city fellow he had shot a cow. The city fellow was all apologetic and paid the farmer for killing his cow and left.

As the following year's deer season was nearing this same city fellow goes to the same farmer for permission to deer hunt his farm and the farmer once again gives him permission to deer hunt on his land.

The farmer once again has second thoughts about giving this city fellow permission to deer hunt and goes out and white wash in big letters his mule.

Opening day of deer season the city fellow shoots the farmer's mule claiming he shot a really big Ohio deer.

After awhile the farmer finally convinced the city fellow he had shot the farmer's mule. The city fellow paid the farmer and apologies for mistakenly shooting the farmer's mule.

Another true story:

Some years ago I searched out a small parcel of public land along a lake to hunt waterfowl.

It's a rather complicated situation with this piece of property so long story short, I got permission to hunt deer, waterfowl, and feral goats on the private property adjoining this piece of public land.

Being neighborly one afternoon I stopped by to visit with the private property owner. And this is his story:

About a year or two earlier, he gave 2 Mexicans (Latino origin) permission to deer hunt the family farm. He was breeding, raising, and selling goats at the time. As with the story of the Ohio farmer he too had second thoughts about giving these two permission to deer hunt. However he didn't white wash his goats. He had gone out rounded up all the goats except his 2 prize winning, onry, billie goats the day before deer season. These 2 billies were known to come to the barn when it was around feeding time.

Well the next morning the 2 billies didn't show up to the barn, which wasn't unusual as they were onry when they thought they were going to being penned up.

A few hours later at the deer check in station about 5 or so miles down the road the 2 Mexicans (Latinos) were there to check in their deer.

A crowd had gathered around their truck to see the deer these fellows had killed. By chance the local game warden was stopping in to check on the number of deer that had been checked in so far when a local fellow who was good friends with the game warden told the game warden he needed to see the deer these Latinos were trying to check in. Luckily this game warden is fluent in Spanish.

Yep, they each killed one of the farmer's prize winning goats. And it took awhile but the game warden was able to convince them they had shot 2 goats and get the information as to where they had shot the goats.

The goat farmer and game warden are also good friends so the game warden called the farmer to come to the check station to identify the goats.

The farmer arrived at the check in station and sure enough they were his missing prize winning goats. The farmer and game warden discussed the farmer's options. The farmer feeling generous opted for the Mexicans (Latinos) to just pay market price for the goats, thinking these 2 we're lucky if they could afford that price. It was when the one Mexican (Latino) opened his wallet exposing several $100.00 that the farmer wished he'd charged them the full value of the goats.

Upon compensating the farmer for killing the goats and a few more words with the Mexicans (Latinos) the game warden let them go.

Now you know just 2 of many reasons why it's hard to get a land owner's permission to hunt their property.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
