Hi everyone!

I'm in the process of planning my first safari and while researching it's quite clear that the same species of animal can have vastly different trophy prices in different areas/countries.

For example, where I'm planning on hunting in Limpopo the price I've been quoted for a Red Heartbeast looks to be great value when compared to other outfitters in different areas. On the flipside, Oryx seem to be quite a bit more expensive than a lot of Namibia prices.

I'm fully aware that different outfitters offer a different level of service etc. but generally speaking what areas do you think are best to target certain species for best value and what species would you specifically avoid in a certain area due to high prices?

What specific animals are you looking to hunt? That will determine a lot of it. Your most affordable trophy fees are more than likely going to be in RSA and Namibia. Typically if the animal is endemic to the area hunted the trophy fee is going to be less. That’s why the trophy fee for oryx is typically going to be less in parts of Namibia that RSA but bushbuck are more affordable in RSA than most of Namibia. Hope this helps.

That's exactly the sort of info I'm after!

My main target is Kudu but when it comes to add on species I'd like to get the best bang for buck with the view of going back to Africa in a different area in the future targeting different species.

I'll suggest that you check out the outfitters that are sponsors on the site here and then look at their package deals.

On my first safari I could of shot both those animals plus 6 more for about the same price on a 10 day hunt as paying day rates and trophy fees for just 2 animals

JimP is absolutely correct. There are some tremendous deals to be had on this site. I just found this site this past summer and have been impressed with the deals offered. I completed by 4th African safari early this month and wish I had know about this site sooner. Some of the deals posted have me planning another trip back sooner rather than later.

On another note, with kudu, the greater southern variety gets a bit larger than the cape, on average, if that matters to you at all. I will say that I have seen some pictures of the cape kudu on this site that are absolute monsters that I would be proud to shoot any day of the week.

If I were after Kudu, I would take a look at Botswana and @NKWE SAFARIS. They are a site sponsor, so plenty of info here.

It’s one more flight than RSA, but it looks to be worth the effort. I will be considering them seriously when Momma gives me the green light for my next trip to Africa. I’m thinking two Kudu and a Eland would be a good start…

Definitely a better deal to get the animals you want in the package, especially the higher price animals. Any add ons should be lower priced extras in my opinion. Adding a kudu or a nyala really changes the price of a hunt quickly. Adding an ostrich or a blesbok won't usually break the bank anywhere. Good luck, you can't go wrong with a sponsor from AH

I would think taking the extra flight to Namibia would negate any savings you might get from a place in South Africa, especially one that will pick you up from joberg. You can spend hundreds of dollars spending a night in joberg to catch the next flight to Namibia. Just my two cents lol

Research a little about the animals you are most interested in hunting. Generally, the value, trophy quality and experience will be best if you are hunting them in the native range. You can hunt Oryx in Texas after all, and fallow deer in RSA.

Take a careful look at the transfer or charter flight from the international airport of arrival and camp. That can be a significant cost, minor cost, or included.

Good luck!

If your first PG safari look for the most important animals to you. For mine Kudu, Gemsbok, Zebra, Impala we’re at the top of my list. For the best value bar none just ask Philip Glass has a 6 animal package that includes my listed animals plus 2 more for $4900 a price I have never seen beat anywhere at Fronteer Safaris on the East Cape.

+1

Along with animals, decide the type of property you want to hunt.
-Multiple hunters in camp or just your party...
-size of concession(s)
-smaller outfitter/operator or larger operation
-type of terrain you want to see/hunt in.

The choosing of an outfitter is a lot of fun and extremely important. I'd say review the hunt reports and deals section to see what sticks out to you on what type of experience you're looking for

The best example of why you should be leaning more toward hunting endemic species. Check out the price for hunting a Cape Buffalo in Texas!

Don’t forget to look at the daily rates-they vary widely and can increase the cost of a hunt significantly.
first safari I would do a thousand hours of research and find the right ph for you, make cost secondary. Research should be a huge and enjoyable part of your hunting experience.
I like the idea of investigating the companies on this site-lots of reports to read on them will give you lots of options to choose from

I agree with the comment on Botswana for kudu. In addition to NKWE, I would look at Bokamoso or Herman and Stienie Nienaber‘s place.

You can fly from JFK or Toronto for starters with Ethiopian airlines via Addis Ababa into Windhoek.

I hunted Namibia because the prices were in Australian dollars so no surprises with fluctuations.
I found the prices to be reasonable compared to some, a little dearer for a couple of species but not by much.
Be careful of people that charge you for kudu depending on the size, bigger = more dollars. We had fixed price regardless of size .
We fell in love with Namibia.

Yeah,

The place we're hunting with certainly do charge more for a Kudu over 55 inches... Which is why I'm thinking about changing my plan a bit and leaving a Kudu for another day in another country...
