Winchester Safari Express .416 Rem.

Yes, the 8mm Mauser is more popular than the 8mm Rem Mag. The 35 Whelen has a following...still minor but all the really serious hunters know about it :).

You going to use winchester ammo to start out with??? Or the Hornady DGS for the new pet???

I'm not sure yet. I might reload? I will look at Ammo Seek to see what is out there. I'd prefer to keep it to $90 per 20.

Gunbroker item # 340117261 60 rds for $165. Keep us posted of shot group and a couple of pictures of the dragon would be nice. Good night.

Enysse, congrats on your latest purchase.

In my opinion the current Mod 70 Win is one of the very finest mass produced, readily available bolt-action rifles on the market.

Your choice in the .416 Rem cartridge is also sound.

Very effective and versatile.

I have had a few clients through my camp with them and with good shot placement and a properly constructed projectile they will knock a buffalo rotten.
If you can find a lighter, flatter shooting projie that hits to the same p.o.i you can swap them out on a plains game/ DG hunt when needed.

Don't be too concerned about recoil.
Use padding or what-ever else you need to feel comfortable whilst you build some familiarity at the bench.
In no time you will become accustomed to it and wonder what all the fuss was about.

P.S it wouldn't hurt to get someone that knows their stuff to check the tension on crossbolts and bedding before putting a large amount, or any for that matter, of rounds through the barrel.
Something that should be done on any big bore in order to avoid the potential of damaging the stock.

Congrats again, welcome to the woderful(lly expensive) world of big bores !

Paul.

Good luck finding reloading components! I've been struggling getting Barnes solids for my 470 and 416.......Bob, you are welcome to try out the 470 when you come down in July!

We bought several of the FN made Winchesters including the .416. It was a tack driver.
I never have had a shortage problem as you have spoken of. After selling my .416 wifey asked if she could sell off all 2000 or so for the cases I had been collecting for the past 5 years to pick up a couple .270's and 06's including what was left of 200 pounds of projectiles you were speaking of. As of now there are some like what you described we had left over as we speak in the classified section.
Here's one of the few targets I have saved.

Thanks for all the complements.

I got the rifle at a good price. It will take a while to gather everything I need for shooting, which is fine I have plenty of other things going on.

I woul like to go down to Australia and do some hunting, it on the list!

Congrats Enysse, enjoy your new rifle !

Hello,
Very good choice .... I have a Winch mod 70 Safari Express cal .375 H&H. perfect !!!:satisfied:
except maybe the capacity of the magazine (3+1)
.416 Rm , .375 H&H ??? I have got the .375 H&H cause the price of the ammo !!!! I'm a shooter and I don't reload ...:small:
The first scope I 'd mounted on was a 1.25-4.5 x24 , but now I have a Leupold 3-9x40 cause this rifle is very accuracy ... not my eyes
65 years old !!! The eye relief of the Leupold is quite good, no problem :satisfied:

Enysse, congrats on your latest purchase.

Congrats again, welcome to the woderful(lly expensive) world of big bores !

Paul.
Wonderful(ly expensive) world of big bores : I confirm!!! expensive ....

A dream Sabatti .470NE ....
I know well .35Whelen, very good ammo. I have a CZ 550 Synthetic 9.3x62 Mauser : more powerful than the .35Whelen. ! Bullets heavier , closed to 300g ...
but a little bit less accuracy.

It's gonna kill you bebo but Cabelas had the Sabatti .470NE on sale for $3500.00 a few weeks back. The .35 Whelen ammo is half the price of 9.3x62mm. I have really not liked most of 9.3x62mm rifles made and available in the USA. You never know what can come available?
I found out Remington stopped making .416 Rem brass a few years back, lucky for me I found some stashed away.

I have the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express in 416 rem mag. Great out of the box rifle. Nice grain in the stock, the crf bolt is as slick as butter from new. Only thing not impressed with is the MOA trigger they now fit. Love the no creep and backlash feel, but can't adjust it down light enough to my like. Sitting on top is a Leupold 2-7x33 in Leupold QD mounts on Leupold bases. Brass was no problem to find- only to pay for. Norma and Hornady Custom are available loaded or unprimed. I usually make them by necking up 375h&h and fire forming but taking this rifle away to Zimbabwe I needed the correct brass to save any Custom's Official's confusion. Using 78gn of ADI 2208 the Woodleigh 400gn Round Nose gets pushed at 2400fps and will group 5 shots under the inch at 100m off the bench. Same powder and weight but with the 400gn Woodleigh Hydrostatically Stabilised Solid gives only 2350frs but shoots to the same poa and groups even tighter. Yes the Winchester's magazine follower and action do feed the hyrdo's into the chamber everytime without jamming. Love this rifle.

I too have an 8mm Rem Mag in a Model 700 BDL. It now wears a Boyds laminate stock with proper cross bolts fitted. Sako style extractor fitted to the bolt, action trued and bolt lugs lapped. Speed lock firing pin kit fitted( it's amazing how many products there are out there to turn a Model 700 action into a benchrest competition winner.) I also gave the factory barrel a decent crown job. Remington unprimed cases were a bit harder to find, but same as my 416, I just neck down 375h&h brass and fire form. Woodleigh make the excellent 250gn. Push it with 80gn of ADI 2217 powder and it is doing 2630fps. This is just about on the maximum impact velocity recommended by Woodleigh. There is more than enough room in the case to load 84gr Of ADI 2217 but groups blow out to 3 times the size. I stick with 80gn of ADI 2217 and can use this rifle on small "varmit" size animals out to 200m, that is how accurate it is. No sight adjustment is needed from 25m- 200m it is that flat you will hit what you're aiming at. Only problem is it won't feed the 170gn Woodleigh Hydro Solid and the only bullets that reliably feed are long spire points or round nose. Being in Australia we have to wait until Mr Woodleigh has completed all his overseas orders before they supply the domestic market, I have ordered a batch of the Capped Hydros. Just as well I'm not holding my breath whilst waiting for delivery!

Crazy World !!!:heh:

Here in Europa the Sabatti, which is european (italian) is sold US$8000.00 no comment !!! :(

9.3x62 Mauser is in Europa a basic cartridge . (Elk, boar, stag) originally an african cartridge created to compete with the 400/360 ... long time ago!
Price of the 9.3x62 Mauser is US$15.00 to 40US$ according to the Bullet.(pack of 20 piéµes)

France (Europa) #1 : 7x64 Brenneke like .308W/30.06 in USA . : #2 ammo is .300WM.

The very good .35Whelen is not cheap, US$35 to 50US$. (pack of 20 piéµes) and not known ... only two rifles : Remington 7600/750 :(

Bebo, that is hard to figure out...it's a backwards world some days!

drew416, interesting stuff. I can hardly wait to shoot the .416 Rem! I really think the 8mm Rem Mag it's a excellent caliber and I have no idea why it isn't more popular. It's really better than the 300 Win Mag. in every way, but ammo and guns available to the mass public!

I think America is really slow to accept the metric system, but the metric system makes a lot of sense. It simplifies the math!

Congrats on your new purchase!! I bought a New Winchester Mod 70 a few months back. Haven't shot it yet but it sure fits me fantastic. Mines in .375 H&H. Glad you got one. Good for you. :)

Great choice and buy Enysse! Being a die hard Winchester fan makes me a bit bias, ok a lot bias. You will fall in love with that combo real quick, if not kick her this way as I have a spot in the herd next to her sister...Let me know what loads she eats up best. Curious if its close to what I feed mine.

Thanks BnC 04, still trying to acquire reloading equipment, I'll post pictures soon, I have been busy. People are right, the trigger could be better.
