Hang in there

Oh yeah, those 30+ degree temperature changes are a killer.

I can remember when I was at scenic 29 Palms Ca. and the September daily average was pushing 100F and then the nighttime low was about 65F. "We" decided to do a night hump in all of our wonderful heat trapping gear, full flaks, helmet, 782 gear and full pack and guns. The standard Marine route of march is 3 miles in 50 minutes with a 10 minute rest every hour. Jeebus, the poncho liner went to the top of the pack after the first pit stop.

When you are used to working 100F, 65 is downright cold....

The suck used to do operation Hi-Lo/Lo-Hi. A march from Death Valley, the lowest point in CONUS to the peak of Mt. Whitney, the highest point in CONUS.
I’ve been to Death Valley once (a mild 110F) and to Mt. Whitney twice in the summer. I CANNOT imagine a “hike” from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney at any time of the year! I know, maybe we could get some unsuspecting AHers here to pay us for that adventure in preparation for their African hunting adventure? Hey, if they want to hunt large DG and walk 10-20k in one day, they need to get in shape and this would be the ultimate way to accomplish that goal? Of course with a 30lb pack filled with survival stuff and food. “African Hunting Preparation Course”? Ha! Ha! Ha!

Overheard today:
“You know you are in Minnesota in the winter when the inside of your refrigerator is 50 degrees warmer than it is outside of your house!”

We’ve been in the below zero F temps for a couple weeks. The kids’ downhill and cross country skiing weekend events have been cancelled two weekends in a row. I still run outside in this weather, I like the quiet and darkness!

this level of cold is normal every winter. Seems like we always see a -10 to -20 F patch of winter.

“I like the quiet and darkness”. +1

A number of our friends have moved to the Texas Hill Country where I have my farm.
Have been fortunate so far- our well houses have heat lamps and able to keep the livestock fed.

Our friends have lost power and water so it’s been a tough go since they moved here from Austin and DFW. So it got cold inside there houses.

We used terra cotta flower pots and candles to heat rooms- turn the pot upside down on 3” block so that there is space for air to enter underneat. A couple of small tea light candles provide a surprising amount of heat. Hope her carpet is fireproof.

Thought I’d pass this along

Friend outside of Austin in a brand new house had his water pipes burst on Friday. Power out too. He's been melting snow over the fire to flush his toilets and cooking "cowboy style" since then. His only complaint was he was running low on whiskey. He'll be just fine when the world ends...

I would like to think that our membership is smarter than that!

If you walked that course I would be pretty sure you could walk down an Eland.

I wouldn't try it right now.

My old man did it back in the late 50's.

I look at that route of march over two weeks ( I'm going on memory here) and have to say what the sheet. Granted they had football fields and field tents for quite a bit of the march, but damn... -282 feet below sea level to + 14500 feet above sea level is a pretty amazing feat.

Now the crazy ultra-marathoners are doing it with goo and glam. Freaking amazing.

While they were on patrol behind enemy lines they used to piss their pants in that temperature instead of risking frost bite.
It's very risky. If there is no hope of returning to "A Barn and Chow" soon, then the consequences can be tragic. In connection with the recent events, the army of Napoleon was remembered. As you know, there are about 5 thousand out of 610 thousand left, and many died during the retreat. And, indeed, there were no special frosts during the retreat from Moscow to Berezina - the strongest was at night -8. But this is actually enough, you can freeze at +10, if you are tired, without food and tents. Then, to Vilno frost hit and to -28, there is already everything, alles kaput. They froze like this (the specialist is an extreme tourist, he went skiing to the North pole-he explained it to me, and it is written somewhere in his memoirs). At first, the hands froze and frostbitten, and it became impossible to manage the clothes for the natural needs. And when all this business was sent to pantaloons, in the cold there were already a few hours left before the final. So it is better to risk the most expensive, but save your life.

The -41C sucks.
We had it here too. :E Cold:
Did you have the wind as well? With the wind chill it was -57°C (that's below -70°F my american friends)
And it doesn't matter how prepared you are for it, temperatures like that are downright painful!
But I really feel for all of you experiencing (or even worrying about) frozen pipes and power outages. When that happens it makes life very difficult!
If you think about it, we really take a lot of our comforts for granted, don't we?
Imagine what our ancestors went through. And even more, for people in less fortunate situations all throughout the world.
I wish everyone the best, and hope that mother nature shows her kindness to you soon!

We have a bunch of wind turbines out west of Salina Kansas. I haven't heard if they are frozen up. I think the power they generate leaves the state. We had 23 below this morning and my well pit stayed above freezing. I put a small heat lamp in it and covered the lid with straw bales. We burn wood when it gets cold and my house stayed right at 75. There has been some controlled power outages but none has hit us yet. My generator will run the whole house if we loose power. So we are prepared for the worst.
Yeah we’ve got a whole house generator as well and 1000 gallons of propane. No worries.

Me I like warm and dry, like my dog. After a lifetime in Africa one gets an itch to go somewhere else, Scotland looked so idyllic. Then I spent a month there on a project, nearly died of cold, and that was before the cold cold. So Harare it is forever.

Yup hot and dry...fed up with the rains now...but that cyclone coming in going to hammer moz..and also zim by looks of things...so you going to get wet...hopefully have run out of steam.by here....and went to boarding school in Scotland at 8years old ...what made me allergic to cold crap weather... :E Big Grin:

Being a Zambian/Rhodesian/South African I've never liked the cold. Living in the UK for 6 years confirmed that for me. But one of the best holidays was spending some time just outside St Johns, Newfoundland December 1983. The TV was telling me it was -23/24 and it was damn cold outdoors. But I did get to ski down the road (that was enough for me) and go skating and skidoo-ing on a frozen lake.

But I had a plane ticket from there to Florida for a week or so then on to Rio for 3 days then home.

It does depend on what we are used to and prepared for. You keep those bugs, snakes and hurricanes. I'll keep chilling the rum on the porch and dressing up to go to the car.
@BRICKBURN
when it's cold you can always put another layer of clothes on and another log of wood on the fire plus cuddle the wife.
When it gets to hot tho and you take your shirt off your screwed because you can't take anymore off and the wife won't let that sweaty body anywhere near her.
Give me the cold any day but not as cold as you fellas are getting.
Bob

For those with no power, how do they stay warm?
some of us have some really warm hunting gear. ;)

we were without power for about 36 hours. didn't get too frosty in the house, 51º F was as low as it got.

we are definitely not prepared for Arctic blasts, we got down to 11 or 12º yesterday morning, and tomorrow is looking like about 20º. Last time it was this cold here was 1989, then 1981, then some time in the early '60s before that.

By mid-February here, it's frequently early Spring - you'll start seeing the trees sprouting leaves and flowering plants start to bud.

Girlfriend and I went paddle boarding again. Will go to the beach tomorrow early morning when winds are down. Weather is going to be brisk 68F.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
