The last time I sat down with a group of Russians - about a dozen Russian Admirals and Generals at a two-week Department of Defense sponsored conference at Harvard of all places - they tried to kill me with 100 proof Vodka. I like to think that I can handle Bourbon and Scotch - but these guys were professionals.

Nobody beats a real Russian with vodka.
Not even in the age of glasnost and perestroika .
Even Napoleon was defeated in a drinking contest with Kotusov

A real russian does not drink this make.
Sorry for OT

Although there are wild rumors about the Russians, in this case I can not object. Everything is so. You're the lucky one.

Only been on two feral hog hunts. One we hunted from blinds which was fun and in a weekend I managed 3 as I recall. I used a Kimber Classic Select in 308 with a Leupold 2-7x. The second hunt I posted on here. An absolutely awesome helicopter hog hunt! If you want to know more, please read my report. The land owner (one of the King Ranch properties) wouldn't allow metalic cartridges, so they furnished an 870 with 00 buck. You had to be pretty close for it to be effective. Close as in below the tops of the cottonwood trees!
The blind hunt I brought the meat home. The helicopter hunt we left them in the fields. The pilot said they would be gone in three days.
Also popped a couple of coyotes from the helicopter. I highly recommend anyone to try this! Great fun!

Alas, in my backyard there are not wild boars, but a 12-million megacity. Although, by the way, it happens that moose and wild boar wander through the system of forest parks.
In general, Russia is not a hunting paradise. All species are at the limit of survival here due to the cold and deep snow in winter, so, for example, the European deer without feeding is found only in Poland, and to the east it is not.
Therefore, the main hunting for wild boar is from towers on feeding grounds, in a properly organized hunting farm (but wild boars are wild there, there are no fences). The license for this piglet cost about $ 200, and the main task was not to shoot someone adult. Moreover, in some places you can not shoot sows at all, because of their value for reproduction, and it is risky to buy a license for an adult cleaver (about 500$). A good trophy is unlikely, but its meat in the hunting season can have a very unpleasant smell. Once our team got such a boar with its men's perfume, and one of our friends with meat in a backpack made part of the way in the subway, and he was alone in his half of a crowded car. We ate the meat then, in my opinion, but with serious culinary tricks. Those of us who didn't have dogs, of course.

The rifle is a well-deserved Mosin of 1942, war time, made when the Germans were still standing near Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad, so the exterior finish is quite simple, although everything is OK inside. View attachment 384143
Night sight - army, universal, also ancient, like the shit of a mammoth. But it works and can be used as a club when needed.

Hunted in Russia near Tver in -94. Driven hunt with dogs.
Should be moose, pigs and sika deer but I saw no of those but almost got runned over by a bear.
Hangs on my wall now. The other hunters shot nice mooses pigs and sika deers.
Really nice hunt and nice people that took good care of us!
And of course super good russian food! Especially borst!

Cool thread with lots of cool guns.

Texas hogs were actually the first animal I ever hunted- on a buddy's ranch out near Llano.

I used to have a SCAR 17S for pigs, but really didn't enjoy shooting it. So, here's my current setup, Christenson Arms CA-15, eotech, silencerco saker:

Trying for the second time this year to get to the Kamchatka to hunt bear. Last spring was canceled by Covid, and this spring is starting it look iffy again. I have, however, been practicing on the Vodka.

I would love an AR10 platforyfor bushpig, specifically with the ability to double up for security and self defense, given the locations of some of my baits.

However, I’ve found the 10 shot Tikka CTR a good compromise, and with the turn of two levers, she has a Z5 on for daytime work. Hunted with a Yukon Photon infrared up until recently, and replaced with an ATN MARS 2,5-25 recently. With the Norwegian Hausken surpresser there is so to speak no recoil , and minimal noise produced by the Nosler 150gr BT at 2700 fps.

I can only envy you. I always wanted to go to Kamchatka, but so far I haven't been able to. Now my friends there, as tourists, sent videos of bathing in hot springs - there is a Valley of Geysers, but it is not easy to get there. Once I had a student, he served at the border post on the coast of Kamchatka, just near this Valley. There, each bear had its own section of beach, and they regularly inspected it.

I'll tell you a little secret - not all Japanese carry a hara-kiri knife, and not all Russians drink vodka. And now, with motorization and strict rules on the handling of weapons, this case has become quite bad. But I hope the custom of" getting a foreigner drunk " has been preserved.

Croatia 190 kgs; Blaser R93 7mmRM, heart shot on the run - never be able to repeat that one.
I've seen similar shots fired by other hunters a couple of times. It was frustrating - it was hard to hope that you would achieve something like this yourself. Once I saw it - we were combing a small forest, and as soon as we entered it, our dogs - spaniels and Wachtelhunds - drove two roe deer. My neighbor Konstantin raised his shotgun and got a bullet in the neck from about fifty meters away as deer ran. And he was wearing gloves. How is this possible?
When I started hunting many years ago with the TOZ-34 shotgun, on the contrary, I was unlucky, there were annoying misses, although the results at the "running boar" stand were not bad. But I missed when I was hunting. It took me a while to figure out what was going on: I was holding the boars at gunpoint, but I raised my head and the slug went higher. Excitement, because it's not a partridge.
With optics, of course, it's different.

In 2002 I was assigned at the Pentagon as a Major General. The Chief of Staff called me to his office and asked me to attend the biannual Russian/American General officer conference at Harvard University. I speak Arabic, some German, and a bit of French, but not one word of Russian, so I tried to refuse. The Chief was having none of it, and suggested I quit complaining and attend.

We had a grand ten days disagreeing about almost every geo-political issue. I had worked in both the Defense Intelligence Agency and with Special Ops in several previous jobs, so I picked out the GRU guy in about the first hour - probably about the same time he pegged me. ;) I ended up striking up a really good relationship with a tough old Brigadier who still served in Spetsnaz. We sat up one night till two in the morning working our way through a bottle of 100 proof Vodka that he had brought discussing the US's impending operations in Afghanistan and his unique lessons learned as a young officer there in the eighties. We managed to do all of that with neither of us being fluent in the slightest in the other's language.

They were great people and I look forward to experiencing a bit more of Russia if and when they let us make our hunt.

Warthog are cool, but Bushpig are something very special indeed. I never saw one until my fourth trip to Africa and never took one until the sixth and seventh. They are an amazing game animal. My double at dawn in Mozambique is one of my proudest moments as a hunter.

Perhaps one of the best rewards for hunting Kudu in dense mountain thickets and valleys is to find a big gnarly bushpig boar in the daylight and being able to take him.

Those are great pigs and you are very fortunate to have found them in the day on two occasions. I absolutely love bushpig, and living in sugarcane and Macadamia country in Kwazulu Natal, I am fortunate to be able to hunt them often, and spend almost all my spare time trying to outsmart them. Something I will luckily never achieve, as these clever critters are always one step ahead.

really interesting what you write.
The boar, if at all shot in the winter time, come with us in the sausage, then you do not notice her gentleman perfume :)
If we would spare the sow to keep their value, the farmers lynch us.
Leading sows are generally spared,at least they should be.
The Germans before Stalingrad and other Russian cities: those were dark times, that understands here in G.- fortunately - not a single person more.
A wonderful Moisin Nagant you lead there with interesting optics.Glad I am that it can not tell what it experienced everything at that time.

Here my best boar.
