Help with Scope choice for Dangerous Game rifle

Personally I do not like the Remington as a platform for a DG rifle.

However you are on the right track with scope choice. Best for DG scope is whatever can handle the recoil and with which you are comfortable and that has the lowest magnification starting on 1, this is the best, as you are better off and will be faster with this than a scope with a higher low end magnification.

Always keep it on the lowest magnification when stalking. If it is further away you will always have time to zoom up, but if you are zoomed up and it is close you will often not have time to zoom down.

My 2¢: Advise one look through any scope at a close range target in low light. Most have the parallax set at 75 to 100 yards and the image can be blurry at very close range. I have a couple Trijicon 2-10x56, post reticle, without parallax adjustment but all other hunting scopes have it. YMMV but I don't like any scope with an objective lens smaller than 40-44, under certain conditions, the field of view can be too small. Having said that, everyone's eyesight/eyeballs are different. What works for one person, may be a non starter for another.

I talked to Trijicon a while back and they said they would adjust parallax for free if I wanted set closer. So that could be an option if someone wanted to go that route.

Thank you for your advise. I know most prefer an action with CRF. All of my Remingtons in 300 win 375HH and now 416 Rem. have either Sako style or M16 style extraction and have been well tested before a hunt. I have complete confidence in them.

Good day, I use both, the Leupold VXR on my 375 and 300 Win Mag and the Trijicon on my 416. I found the single post on the Trijicon hard to get used to but practice makes perfect for in close it works well. Can't go wrong with either.

Mark,

I am sure that somewhere someone has has a Remington extractor absolutely fail, and maybe even break in a well maintained factory rifle firing factory rounds and when someone who has personally witnesses it and gets a signed affidavit with 3 witnesses also attesting to having witnessed it I might actually pass it off as something other than the ramblings of someone who's primary experience comes from reading bs spread by just another bs artist who's never seen these "phantom malfunctions" either yet unfortunately spreads this tripe.

I wish you the best of luck and best wishes.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to go with Leupold VX6 HD 1-6x24 firedot.

Good choice it will serve you well and is the perfect magnification for the application.

See you already got a scope.

Another option would have been the Nightforce NXS 1-4x24. They are about $1,100 New if you shop around and in my experience very tough. They work very well in 3-Gun where fast target aquisition is an absolute imperative to be competitive.

I would never bother the people to sign the paper. I will say I have personal witnessed 2 Remington bolt handles ripped off the bolt body. In a DGR you are trusting your life and the life's of the people you are hunting with. Everyone has their own opinions.

Agreed. My first DG rifle was a Remington model 700 Classic in 375 H&H.....best decision I ever made was to get rid of it...

It might be a good accurate platform for a PG rifle but a DG rifle it ain't....

I have owned both and sell both. personally, I prefer the Trijicon. I am just not a fan of the CDS system. Two reasons: a. it’s totally not needed on a low power scope intended for short range, and b. I’m a simple man; I detest complex stuff in the field or gear that needs (in this case) an Allen wrench to reset zero if something goes wacko. I brought a VX5 to S.A. Two years ago, loved the scope, BUT, had to rezero when I arrived and was none too happy about it.... KISS - go for the Trijicon, awesome glass... I had one on a Sako Kodiak 375 & loved it!

Inline 6

As a child of the 40's I was forever hanging out at the beach with friends. It was sometime in the 50's when I first heard of the infamous story about laying of eggs from a greenhead fly into cold sores on the lip of a beautiful girl . As legend has it she woke up one morning and upon looking into the mirror noticed her lip moving like something was inside it. She went to the doctors and when he landed it maggots came out in number.

I heard that story for many years by many people who swore they had personal knowledge of this infestation until I left to become the first one on my block to legally kill people who never did anything to me and many years later when I came back it appears that there was an entirely new collection of people who has seen the exact same infestation with what sounded like the same woman, doctor and outcome of their meeting.....

I have been shooting animals.......especially the ones that I eat or want to die immediately. It has never failed that when I mention that I shoot white tails in the skull .......multiple SINGLE witnesses of deer who are starving to death because their jaw is shot off. In one thread here 4 posters came up with the same exact story. My though is that if the all saw these deer with the jaw shot off just how ematiated can a deer get by the second day of rifle season?

I must admit that a Remington with a different extractor looks to be more durable and even nicer, but just how many that have the original replaced have had it done because it broke? Just because I've never seen a broken one doesn't mean they don't or can't break, but it's not very probable. A bolt handle falling off doesn't seem very probable either, but if you say you witnessed it first hand.....X's 2 none the less....well it must have happened then.....

Good luck......keep up the good work.

I’m not a fan of the CDS system either. Is it possible to get the VX-6 1-6 without CDS turrets, either new or aftermarket from the custom shop?

Yes you can get it without the turrets. I have 1 (my newest) with turrets and two older ones without. I lean heavily to not having turrets on a DG rifle.
I also have two with illuminated dots and one without. I prefer the illuminated dots. Against a dark buff in the shade or black bear in the rain they really show up.

I’d recommend looking at the 1-8 x 24 LPO scopes, illuminated reticle. Fast acquisition at 1x but can zoom in for those 200 + yard shots at 5-8x. Yes, they are a “combat” type scope but will work well for hunting as well. Always been an open sight guy, but been looking at the LPO scopes a lot and have to say they really are a good option...only problem is the good ones are pricey, $1200 and up. When I build or order a big bore, this is the direction I’ll go, along with the iron sights :)

The LPO scopes can be limiting in mounting options on a magnum bolt gun. They tend to be drained for use with rails which I would not have on a classic safari rifle. I agree on the optics quality, they can be quite good.
